  • Managers Meeting There is the monthly managers meeting this Thursday Night at 7:30pm in the club rooms. All those interested in managing a team next year should make yourself known to Gerard Martin.
  • Under 10 Match Report The Under 10s accepted an invitation from Ballykinlar to the Neil Thompson memorial tournament on Saturday. The tournament came late in the season but the boys dusted themselves off and picked it up where they left off.

The Group stages saw the boys drawn against local rivals Teconnaught in the first game. The Blues started at 90 miles per hour and stormed into the lead early in the game with Oran Bolton dominating midfield and picking off scores with his left and right boot seemingly at will to ensure that the blues eased their way to victory.

The second game was against a stronger Longstone side who took an early lead, going nine points up, in the first half. This left the Islanders with a mountain to climb for the remaining 7 minute second half. The guys came in for the half time huddle with heads down but after a no holds barred team talk they showed real character and lifted themselves right from the throw-in and made an amazing, but not surprising, comeback to win the game by a point.

The third game of the group was against a young Leitrim side who put it up to the blues but were not strong enough to stop the Islanders progressing to the Cup semi-final unbeaten, where a keen Bryansford side were waiting.

The Blues saw off Bryansford and progressed to the Final against Saul who also topped their Group with an unbeaten record. Conor Dornan led the team out as a very proud captain into the Final.

The Final game was a close encounter with the Blues goalkeeper Peter Kearney making some exceptional saves to keep the team in the game. The Saul team were too strong on the day and came out on top by six scores to four. It was also great to see Fearghal McManus back for the final tournament of the season. He blended well back into the team and put in some great performances throughout the day racking up some great scores. Christopher Allen also made a great impact when he came off the bench to set up a great point for Oran Bolton at a critical stage in the semi-final and he followed up with a great goal himself adding to the Blues tally. Oran Bolton was undoubtedly player of the tournament on the day.

The club really has a promising future if these guys stick together at u12s next year and into the future.

  • Under 21 Match Report St Bridget's, an amalgamation of Loughinisland and Ballykinler, played their first game in the Under 21 Championship away to Bryansford on Sunday afternoon.

Their opponents were very strong and included several players with senior club and county experience, and it was the 'Ford who started strongest with Danny Savage very prominent throughout. St Bridget's battled hard and showed great appetite and desire along with some good football. Peter Byrne, Sean Cochrane and Mark Grant stuck to their tasks against an excellent full forward line, while the half backs, including Conor and Declan Corrigan, provided a solid base from which to build. Goals from Paddy McKenny and David Blayney kept St Bridget's in touch and only 4 points behind at half time. Only for a late Bryansford goal it would have been much closer.

The home side started the second half very strongly and increased their lead. Slowly the Blues began to get to grips with strong plays from Johnny Flynn, Rory Mason, and Conor Megoran. Despite spending long periods without the ball it is credit that every member of the full forward line of Rory King, Paddy McKenny, and Stefan Mason scored.

Despite finishing the game strongly St Bridget's were unable to claw back the deficit. This was a good team performance in a bruising encounter against a strong opponent. If this game is anything to go by then the signs for the future are good.

Training continues on Wednesdays & Fridays. Final Score 2-11 to 2-6.

The St Bridget's team was: Chris Turley,Oisin Teague, Mark Grant, Peter Byrne, Declan Corrigan, Sean Cochrane, Conor Corrigan, Damhan O'Toole, Rory Mason! Conor Megoran, David Blayney, Rory King, Paddy McKenny, Stefan Mason, Gavin Morgan, Matthew Nugent.

Despite giving away height in all sectors of the field the blues played an open attacking style which culminated in a 5pt victory, in a performance where all the lads performed to a very high level. Jordan Murray, Conor Gordon, Owen O'Neill, Declan McClements, Conor Savage, Rory Deegans were exceptional. A cameo performance by a very young Eddie Nixon capped of great night. Bright in the final in Ballkinlar at 12pm Saturday 29th September await and this promises to be a cracker with previous meetings 2 to 1 in Brights favour.

  • Under 10 Match Report

The Under 10s collected two Cups at the weekend. The first was the Dermott Beattie Cup at a Blitz hosted by Ardglass on Saturday and the second was the Aisling Cup hosted by Teconnaught on Sunday.

On Saturday, the boys played with great passion and flair showing off their skills with a convincing win in the opener against Kilclief in the group stage. The boys then played a local derby against Teconnaught, continuing their winning form despite numerous missed chances that kept the score closer than it might have been. The third game was against a stronger Aughlisnafinn side that put it up to the blues but the boys fought hard and again took the spoils. The final group game was against the hosts Ardglass. This game was a great warm up for a final against Bredagh. In the Final, the lads played some great football. Oran Bolton was head and shoulders above the opposition at midfield and was supported well by his partner Oisin Cassidy. Peter Kearney was a star in goals saving some cracking shots from a very determined and well drilled Bredagh outfit. Loughinisland has certainly found a new goalkeeping star at underage level who has excellent reflexes and can distribute the ball well to his team mates. Odhran Barlow, Damian McDowell and Christopher Allen made a solid back line with Conor Dornan playing just in front of them sweeping up any loose ball from the midfield breaks. The team captain, Shea OToole, led the team by example with some great goals and points throughout the day. David Forsythe, Jamie Boyd and Brian Kennedy shone as they combined to convert some great opportunities into scores. Shea lifted the Cup for the team following a championship display against the best of Bredagh.

On Sunday the lads went to Teconnaught to defend their Aisling Cup title from last year. The boys continued where they left off on Saturday scoring 2-16 to 1-2 against a smaller Drumaness side. The scene was set for a rematch against local rivals Teconnaught in the Final. The Blues started well and took the lead. The game was a hard fought contest and Teconnaught were awarded a close free and drew level after what was the last kick of the game. Both sides were content to share the Cup, as joint winners, for the year and Loughinisland retained the Cup as reigning champions but will pass it over to Teconnaught in six months time. The guys showed some great teamwork and individual skills which make for a very bright future for Loughinisland seniors in ten years time.

  • The u12s stepped up to face league leaders St Pauls on Sunday morning. The Belfast team came to Loughinisland looking for two poionts to clinch the league title so although it was the last game of the season there was a lot riding on it. The Blues lost out by a goal in what was a high scoring and fast paced game. The team combined well together and showed a lot of potential for a young side who are largely under 11 and can look forward to a great season next year at this age group. Well done to the young lads.

  • Seniors On Friday Night the Seniors secured Division One status next year with a convincing win over Annaclone. The Blues were short due to the Minor Championship the next day, however produced their best display of the season and with Gary McClements making his senior deput in full forward the Blues defended as a team. Conor Corrigan and Darren McMullan were strong in defense alongside the experienced Conor O'Toole and this created the bed rock for a strong defensive performance that restricted Annaclones scoring opportunities. Aiden Nixon and Paddy McKenny were virtually flawless with the free kicks and goals from Conor Killen and Dan Gordon helped the blues to a 2-15 to 0-4 victory.

  • Ladies The biggest club game of the weekend was in Bright where Loughinisland Ladies faced St John Bosco's (Newry) in the Junior Championship final on Saturday.

Bosco's registered the first point on the board in the opening minutes but Brenda O'Hare for Loughinisland responded with a goal soon after. Play was tight and both sides went point for point throughout the first half drawing level in a thoroughly entertaining first half, Bosco's scored a few successive points which Loughinisland responded to with another first half goal from Emma Keenan. At half time Bosco's were up by only 2 points and the game was in the balance.

The second half saw Bosco's stretch their lead to 5 points but the Blues fought hard and closed down and defended brilliantly while Bosco had the majority of the possession. Helen Rice made a number of vital saves in goal which kept the scores close. Despite the youthful nature of the Loughinisland panel which saw a number of Under 16 players starting, the young ones played with a maturity which hopefully suggests the prospect of a great future for the Loughinisland Ladies in the years to come. Bethan Carville was denied a goal by the woodwork in the closing minutes which given that the final score saw only a 3 point difference was very unlucky and may have changed the outcome.

The Loughinisland Ladies would like to thank their coach Kieran Gordan for his input during the year and wish him a speedy recovery from his current injury.

Loughinisland: Helen Rice, Vanessa Boyd, Rebecca McKelvey, Maureen Nixon, Michaela Flynn, Ellie McConville, Eimear Murray, Karen McClements, Aurla McDowell, Laura Mason, Gemma Gibney, Emma Keenan, Brenda Valentine, Brenda O'Hare, Alana McCaffery. Subs: Bethan Carville, Nadine Mason, Alex McEvoy, Lisa Murray, Edel Trainor, Shannon Lynch.

  • The minors played out an exciting draw against Castlewellan in the quarter final of the championship on Saturday evening in Kilcoo. It was a game which the blues should have won, but could easily have lost. Castlewellan were strong in the first half and played with a strong wind and the Island lads battled manfully to contain the town who had the majority of the possession. Castlewellan led by 1.2 at half time but the Loughinisland lads really raised their game second half to take control of the game aided by a penalty expertly dispatched by Rory Mason. Aaron McClements scored two points as midfielders Damhan O'Toole and Niall McClements started to get a grip on the opposition.

Patsy Megoran was imperious throughout at fullback ably assisted by Ethan Orr and Oisin Teague. A young forward line worked very hard and got the scores to put the blues into a one point lead going into injury time when Castlewellan grabbed a late equaliser. Both sides will be relieved to still be in the competition when they meet again in the replay next week.

7th August 2012

  • Fixtures Seniors v Downpatrick Sat 11th Aug, 6:45pm (Newcastle)
  • The minor team travelled to Parc Esler in Newry to take on Shamrocks in the first game of their Championship qualifying group. On a wet night they made a good start with first half points from Rory Mason, Aaron McClements and a converted '50' by Niall McClements. The defence struggled at times to cope with some good forward play by the home side but Damhan O'Toole and Niall McClements were very strong at midfield and provided a solid platform and supplied good early ball to the dangerous Island forwards. After a tight first half the visitors led 0-6 to 1-2. Both teams had good periods in the second half. Loughinisland pulled away to go into an eight point lead at one stage helpedby a penalty from Seanie O'Reilly. Shamrocks were not done though and finished strongly with a goal and seven points to set up a nail biting finish. Rory Mason was top scorer with 0.5 as Loughinisland held on for the win 2-9 to 2-10. Next up is Tullylish then Clonduff with two teams going through to the knock-out stages.

The blues lead by 4 at the break following a first half dominated by the scoring of the newly returned Luke Turley and minor, Aaron McClements the blues restricted An Riochts opportunities throughout the half in which Peter Byrne, Gary McClements, Niall McClements and Rory King worked hard along with the industrious work from Sean Cochrane and Conor OReilly. The second a half seen the introduction of the ever improving Oisin Teague whos energetic running from deep caused plenty of problems for the visitors and hard working performances from Rory King and Damhan OToole. The blues dug deep, defended as a team and put together an impressive scoreline of 4-11 to 1-10.

9th July 2012

  • Ulster Final Tickets: Orders for tickets for the Ulster Final will be taken in the club hall on Monday night (10th July) after teh Senior match with Clan na Bann (9pm-10pm).
  • Minors First up on tuesday was a trip to Rostrevor. In difficult conditions against a strong opponent the lads dug deep to put in an excellent performance. Cormac Deegan, Patsy Megoran & Declan Corrigan were rock solid in defence, Damhan O'Toole and Sean Cochrane pulled the strings at midfield, while Niall McClements was top scorer with 2.2. After a great first half the Island found themselves under pressure in the second half but finished strongly to come out on top 3.10 to 2.9.

Saturday evening brought a trip toHolywood to take on St Pauls. In a competitive game it was the accuracy of the Loughinisland forwards that made the difference. Rory Mason was the star turn with 10 points, Pete Cochrane scored 1.2, and Conal Fay got 2 points, and the other goals came from Oisin MacManus and Gavin Morgan. The great work of the forwards was build on the solid foundations of the defence where Philip Martin, Hugh Dornan, and Oisin Teague dominated their opponents. Making his Minor Debut Ethan Orr was also very impressive at half back. With a team short of several players a lot of younger guys came in and the team produced possibly their best performance of the season winning 3.14 to St Paul's 1.4.

  • Reserves It was goals galore on Sunday evening when the reserves recorded a comprehensive 7 point victory over Castlewellan. First half goals from Conor Killen, Paul Digney and Aarron McClements set the blues up with a 9 point lead at half time. Best for the blues were Brendan Ward up front, Paul Digney in Midfield and Conor Corrigan in defense. Final Score was 4-14 to 4-7. Next up is Rostrevor in the Championship in 2 weeks.
  • Minors The minors lost by a point in a great game against a very strong Bryansford team. In truth this was a game the Island lads should have won but for a very strong finish by the visitors. With the home team winning 2.3 to 0.4 at half time they would have been very happy with the performance. The defense was excellent, not conceding from open play, with Cormac Deegan & Philip Martin particularly strong. Niall McClements & Sean O'Reilly grabbed the goals. Bryansford did not lie down though and scored 3.5 in the second half. Rory Mason scored 1.4 for the home team in the second half. Despite the final score being 3.8 to 3.9 in Bryansford's favour both teams served up great performances & will surely have an eye out for each other in the later stages of the championship.

  • Romanian Appeal Helpline: The club and the organising committee would like to thank all those who contributed to a great night. Many Thanks
  • Seniors: continued their steady start to the season with a comprehensive 9 point win over a battling Clann An Banna on Friday night. The Blues lined out without several key players through injury and Alan Molloy showed his commitment and versatility and lined out at full back, he was helped by his fellow defenders and in particular Raymond Nixon who put in a flawless first 30 mins. The opening 10mins were tight and early points from Aidan Nixon, Conor and Jamie OReilly settled the blues and once Conor OReilly found the net the blues had settled into their rhythm. John McCarthy and Ryan Stranney started to dominate the midfield exchanges and at half time the blues had built a 7 point half time lead following a goal from Aidan Nixon and points from Rory Mason. The second half seen the blues continue to dominate and Ryan Stranney and Rory Mason added to the scores and the blues held out for a 9 point victory. The Blues used their full squad and Aaron McClements and Paddy Magoran made their first appearances for the seniors.

  • Championship Draw: The seniors have been drawn Castlewellan and the reserves play Rostrevor.
  • The Reserves lost out to Bryansford on Sunday by a point. The lead changed hands several times and the blues battled hard and were unlucky to not get a share of the points. U14's Loughinisland u14s 7-10 kilclief 0-11. Island got off to a strong start with the forwards putting two early goals with in ten minutes kilclief struggled to break down a tough defence which left us dominant in most areas and with eight different players on the score board a great performance was shown by all well done lads .

  • Seniors: Newry Shamrocks 1-5 Loughinisland 1-9. Last Friday seen the start of the Seniors Season the Blues had a tricky away fixture against Newry Shamrocks. Following the news that they would be without Dan Gordon for the first few weeks they knew that only the best efforts would see then capture the first 2 points of the season. So from the stand Dan watched as the blues battled hard in the first half and went in at the break level 1-4 to 0-7. With Conor OToole and Johnny Flynn prominent in defence the blues started the second half on the front foot and points from Rory Mason, Ryan Stranney and Seamus OHare edged the blues ahead. Due to the strong defensive performance and hard work from the whole team Shamrocks managed only a single point in the second half and when a great diagonal ball from Rory Mason put Jamie OReilly through, the star forward was never going to miss and the first 2 points of the season were on the board.
  • Minors: Last Tuesday night the minors also started their competitive season against Mayobridge, the minors are now in the competitive League One. The Blues fought hard and a strong first half performance set up a one point victory. Final score Loughinisland 1-13 Mayobridge 3-6. Hopefully the first of many victories this season.
  • U14's The Under 14s travelled to Laitroim and came home with the points. The whole team showed great strength, team work and skill and everyone in the squad played vital parts in the blues victory. Final score: Laitroim 3-12 Loughinsland 6-13.
  • Reserves: Loughinisland 3-6 Mayobridge 1-10 The reserves continued the good week on the pitch for the club. Recording a double over Mayobridge in a competitive ACPRL 1 game on Saturday evening. Goals from Sean and Conor OReilly and Joe Doran and strong performances from Damhan OToole, James Grant, Paul Digney and Johnny Flynn in defense and the industrious Conor Magoran in midfield fought hard and defended stoutly and limited Mayobridges scoring chances. The blues used the full squad and and everyone involved deserves maximum credit for achieving a victory over Mayobridge at this level for some time.
  • U10's: The u10s took part in their first biltz of the season last Saturday at Castlewellan. The team displayed great teamwork and individual ball skills for so early in the season. They scored lots of impressive goals and points to outclass their opponents in Castlewellan, Dundrum, and Darragh Cross. Well done to the lads for a great start to the season."

Conor Magoran and Paul Digney dominant in midfield were supported by a strong defence in which Peter Byrne, Raymond Nixon and versatile Conor Corrigan restricted their men to limited chances. Eamon Cochrane and James Grant returned from university to flank Brendan Ward in a strong half back line. The blues led by 4 at half time and started the second half strongly, when Aidan Nixon, Conor OReilly and Cillian Monan causing all sorts of problems by winning the early possession and moving the ball quickly to the supporting half forward line of Gary Stranney, David Smyth and Conor Corrigan and later Damian and Rory Mason who sealed the win with a brilliantly worked goal with minutes remaining.
