10th October 2011

  • All County Minor B Championships!! Ex minor star Declan Valentine was the first man on the Kilcoo pitch last Friday night to help celebrate more silverware for the club when the minors won the All County Minor B Championship beating a dogged Newry Bosco by 8 points to 3. The future for the club looks bright and with Johny Flynn and Sean and Peter Cochrane continuing to show great promise, the senior boys will be under considerable pressure for their places next year.

On a bitterly cold night the blues attacking half backs Philip Martin and Declan Corrigan caused endless problems for the Bosco defense and on the big pitch took the game to their opponents. The blues were the fitter team and with good passing and teamwork, man of the match Johnny Flynn and his midfield partner Dabhan OToole won the majority of the midfield possession. The game took an unwanted twist after 15 minutes when Paddy Magoran was sent off following two yellow cards but the blues heads didnt drop. Early points from Aaron McClements, J Flynn, Declan Corrigan and the promising young Callum Noade put 4 points on the board before Bosco could register their first score. Bosco settled into their stride following the sending off and against 14 men must have fancied their chances of a comeback, but the blues thought otherwise. In the blustery conditions scores were hard to come by and the blues defense including Peter Byrne and Paddy Magoran working hard made life difficult for the Bosco attack and went into the break leading 5-1.

The blues started the second half strongly but really made life even more difficult for themselves when Dabhan OToole was sent off following two rash tackles in quick succession and left the blues with 13 men. However the blues have showed great determination this year and lifted the workrate to compensate for the sendings off fighting for every ball and working to cover for their teammates. Captain J Flynn, Sean OReilly and sub John Cassidy added points for the blues and with the two Cochranes defending fiercely the blues held out for a 5 point victory.

Hopefully this will not be the last piece of silverware that these young men will win in their footballing careers and although they have plenty to learn, hard training sessions and knocks to take they will hopefully make an impression at senior level for years to come. Congrats to the Management Team of Ciaran Fitzpatrick, Sean Digney, Brendan Mason and Frank McLeigh. Team: Chris Turley, Pat Magoran, Peter Cochrane, Peter Byrne, Declan Corrigan, Sean Cochrane, Philip Martin, Johnny Flynn (Capt), Damhan OToole, Niall McClements, Sean OReily, Aaron McClements, Callum Noade, Rory Mason, David Smyth. Subs: Ryan Mason, John Cassidy, Matthew Nugent, Gary McClements, Gavin Morgan, Gary Stranney, Cormac Deegans, Oisin Teague, Aiden Murray. Scorers Johnny Flynn 0-2, Sean O'Reilly, John Cassidy, Aaron McClements, Rory Mason, Declan Corrigan, Callum Noade all 0-1 each.
All County Minor B Championships!! All County Minor B Championships!!

3rd October 2011

  • Games: Sun, U/12s v Carryduff (A) Noon, Fri. U/18s v Newry Bosco at Kilcoo, 7.30pm, Sat. Seniors v Downpatrick (H) 4.00pm
  • The minors made it through to the All County B Final with a 3 point win over Tullylish. The blues suffered an early set back when Sean OReilly was sent off for two yellow cards. The 14 men though showed great teamwork and determination to see off a gallant Tullylish side. The B final is this Friday night in Kilcoo at 7:30pm against Newry Bosco.
  • The Seniors beat Annaclone on Saturday evening in dreadful conditions by one point to set up a make or break showdown with local rivals Downpatrick for a coveted place in the promotion playoffs. Annaclone were fighting for survival and made life difficult for the blues and led by 7 points to 5 at half time. The blues found Annaclones defensive formation hard to break down although the blues fought hard and managed to keep in touch. Ben OReilly and Seamus OHare fought hard for the blues up front while John McCarthy and Gareth Johnson achieved parity in midfield. The second half seen Dan Gordon start to dominate the play and Paddy McKenny cause Annaclones defence endless problems. Annaclone start the 2nd half strongest with a goal that put them 4 points up. However under Paul McShane the blues have developed a great team ethic and strong determination throughout the year and with their steely desire to win, fought back to level and in added time Ryan Stranney fisted over the winning point. The next game is the biggest game of the season and a win will guarantee a playoff place for division one.

  • Aisling Cup Competition Loughinisland hosted this years Aisling Foundation Under 10 tournament on Saturday past. Four Teams, Bredagh, Darragh Cross, Saul and Loughinisland battled it out for the Cup and Shield competitions.

The standard of football was very high throughout the day by all teams. Bredagh were late replacements for Teconnaught but performed very well with a depleted line-up against the hosts in the opener. Loughinisland took that game fairly comfortably and progressed to the Final of the Cup. Darragh Cross put it up to Saul in the other semi-final match but Saul were the stronger team at the end and progressed to the final to meet the Blues. The Loughinisland boys played well in the Final to take a 1-5 to 0-2 lead by half-time. Saul made a valiant come back in the second half with two goals but the Blues held out to win 2-8 to 2-6 in a closely fought game to take the Cup from the reigning Champions.
Loughinisland U-10 Aisling Cup Team 2011

The Blues captain Damian McDowell played well in goal and provided the Blues with some excellent opportunities from his well placed kick-outs. Aaron Cooper, playing for the first time outfield, showed excellent high-catching skills and he also bagged the first goal for the Blues in the Final. Oisin Cassidy made an immediate impact, coming on from the bench, to bag the Blues second goal with his left foot. Eddie Nixon took a really hard rugby style hit in the last minute of the game to stop the onslaught from the never say die Saul team which preserved the home teams lead until the final whistle. Other strong performances came from Peter McMullan, Brandon Boyd, Conor Dornan, Rory Smyth, Michael Clarke, the McDonald twins, Peter Kearney, and Shea OToole. Congratulations to the whole squad of 21 players who trained hard and played well all year winning the Glasdrumman Shield, taking Runners Up in the RGU Shield losing by a point to Longstone, and taking the Aisling Cup on Saturday to cap what has been a great season for an up and coming group of players. The Management team would like to thank the parents and guardians of the players who showed great commitment throughout the year in taking the players to training and matches and providing the greatly appreciated support for the team. Thank you to Helen Rice, who refereed on the day, and to John Nugent who organised the event, and also stood in to make the presentation to the winning teams.

The Shield Final was a hard fought game between Darragh Cross and Bredagh with Darragh emerging as victors of the Shield.

More importantly this event raised over 200 for the Aisling Cancer Foundation charity. Many thanks to all who contributed to the charity on the day.

  • Under 12 boys: Last Sunday Loughinisland Under 12 boys beat Saul on Sunday past in an entertaining match at Macartan Park. Playing with a very strong wind in the 1st half Loughinisland scored 5 great points, and goals from Aidan McLoughlin, Niall Flynn and Declan McClements helped the boys to a 15 point lead at half time. Playing into the wind in the 2nd half the Island added just a goal by Calum Ferney and a couple of great points from Gavin McDonald. The defensive wall held strong conceding only 2 goals and 2 points to Saul during these 20 minutes. A great team display on the day by all squad members. Final score was 5.7 to 2.4.

On Sunday past the The Island Under 12's beat Bredagh by 3 points on Sunday, Ronan Brennan's goal the difference in the two sides. Playing against the breeze, points by D McClements, centre half back S Keenan, and A McLoughlin helped Loughinisland to a 2 point lead at half time. Hard hitting defending by A Boyd, N Mahon and L Smith restricted the Bredagh boys to just 2 scores in the first half. 4 great points from D McClements in the second half, along with others by A McLoughlin, G McDonald and C Fernie cancelled out a goal and three points by Bredagh. The backs were all outstanding, with T Casement playing well in goals, and C Allen and R Bolton immense. This win takes Loughinisland up the league table, now sharing top spot with Kilcoo and Saul with two games to play.

12th September 2011

  • The seniors lost out to Clonduff in the Championship on Saturday evening. The blues started without county star Dan Gordon and with Gareth Johnson having to play two championship matches in one day were stretched in the midfield department. However playing with the wind in the first half they managed to build a lead of 4 points at the break. However 3 second half goals for Clonduff was too much for the blues to claw back and when Con Reynolds blew the final whistle the blues were 2 points down. Best for the blues were Peter Cochrane and John Turley in defense and Ben OReilly up front.
  • Hypnotist: On Saturday night Hypnotist Michael McCoy put on a brilliant nights entertainment in the club as part of a Senior Players fundraising night. Many thanks to Conor OToole and those who sold tickets, Michael McCoy and all the star volunteers who made the night a great success. The club would also like to thank James McClements and Johnny Flynn who cleaned the clubrooms on the night!! If they could return the brush and the mop, thanks!

5th September 2011

  • Our U10s took part in the RGU tournament last Saturday and where very unlucky not to come away with victory in the shield competition as they were beaten by a point by Longstone in the final. In the group stages they defeated Burren B and Aughlisnafin, drew with Mayobridge and lost to Carryduff. Finishing third in their group they qualified for the knockout stages of the shield competition where they defeated St Michaels and Clonduff B before losing to Longstone. With the Aisling cup tournament next on the agenda for the team they should be confident of regaining the trophy if they can maintain the level of performance that they have displayed all season. Well done to Gary Boyd and his management team
  • U14's Also well done to the U14 boys who had a one point win over Darragh Cross last Monday evening and have now progressed to the semi final of the East Down championship.
  • The Under 12 boys travelled to Kilcoo on Wednesday 24th August during the thunder and lightening storm; fortunately by the time they arrived the sun was shining. Goals from Tom McDonald and Aidan McLoughlin helped the Island to a two point lead at half time. A selection of fantastic scores from Declan McClements and Gavin McDonald saw the lead increase despite a goal from Kilcoo. The defensive wall put up by Eddie Nixon, Shaun Keenan, Peter McMullan and Ryan Bolton, assisted by the width of the post, ensured that Loughinisland protected their lead and eventually ran out winners by 6 points in a very entertaining and enjoyable match.
  • The seniors had an excellent victory over Clan na Banna to maintain their third, and playoff, position in the league with just two games remaining - away to Annaclone and home to Downpatrick. This weekend the quarter finals of the club championship are due to be played with Loughinisland scheduled to meet Clonduff at RGU Downpatrick this Saturday. The timing of this fixture may be subject to change so please check throw in time if intending to travel to the game.
  • The reserves, though defeated by three points, put in an excellent performance against a very strong Bryansford team in the Division One of the Reserve League. The blues fielded a very young team with the starting fifteen consisting of nine minors who did not look out of place playing at this level of competition and we would hope to see some of these holding down regular senior team positions in the coming season..
  • Bon Voyage The club would like to wish Anthony Rogan Bon Voyage who is leaving these shores to head to New Zealand. Anthony has been a regular player on the senior team for the last few seasons. Hopefully we will see him return to wear the Loughinisland jersey again.

Oisin Teague led from the front scoring 1-2 in the first half when Peter Nugent also got a goal. Gary Stranney & Aaron McClements got 2 points each from midfield. The Island lads led 2-7 to 0.3 at half time but Kilcoo were not done yet. They came back strongly in the second half & asked some questions of the Loughinisland defence. Justin Barlow was excellent at centre half back ably assisted by Ethan Orr & Dean McLoughlin who scored 2 second half points. Donal McKay had a great game at full back with Ryan Mason ever reliable in goals. Loughinisland finished the game worthy winners with 2-17 to Kilcoo's 1-11.

  • Congratulations! The club would like to extend their congratulations to Gemma Gibney and Laura Mason who were members of the NI Netball team, who finished 8th in Netball world cup success in Singapore. All club members are welcome to celebration presentation at 9:30 in Club this sat night.
  • The reserves participated in the recent summer competition in Ballykinlar. After beating Bright by a point in the quarter final, a youthful team lost out to Drumaness Senior team in the semi final.
  • U10's Loughinisland fielded two u10 teams in the 9 a-side competitive blitz at Glasdrumman on Saturday...

Team 1 captained by Brandon Boyd, comprised the older players in their last year of u10s. They played well and progressed to the Final of the Shield Competition. The team worked hard together and showed some great skills. Dara McDonald was solid in goal. Oran Bolton, Tom McDonald and Stefan Ginesi tackled hard at the back and made some great clearances upfield. Eddie Nixon and Brandon Boyd were smaller than most of their opponents at midfield but held their own to give the Blues some excellent scoring chances. Up front, Aine Smyth, Michael Clarke and David Forsythe took their chances scoring several goals and points between them.

The Final was never really in doubt as the team improved throughout the competition. The final score was 3-1 to 1-1 for the Blues against Attical. The Blues however suffered a big loss when David Forsythe showed great determination and courage diving to punch a ball towards goal and hit his head against the metal goal post. The game stopped for a short period while David was medically assessed and he was taken off to hospital for an overnight stay. Thankfully he was discharged on Sunday and is on the mend. The team wish him all the best and look forward to seeing him back in the team soon.

Team 2 - Loughinisland having been depleted with holiday makers used this opportunity to field a younger development squad with a number of u8s in it. This young side benefited from an interim management team of Amanda Barlow, Deidre MacManus, Niamh MacManus and Julie Digney who roared encouragement from the line and saw the team grow in confidence as they performed really well taking some beautiful scores.

Oisin Cassidy, Shea OToole and Dylan Owens tackled and chased hard to win the ball from their bigger opponents and set up great scoring opportunities. Peter Kearney guarded the goal and connected his kickouts with his team mates. Damian McDowell and Odhran Barlow worked hard to win the ball and pass it forward to their forward line of Fearghal MacManus, Jamie Boyd, and Eoin OToole. These guys used this development opportunity to prove that the Blues have a great future for the next few years at u10 level with some impressive passing and shooting skills. Keep up the hard work guys.

  • The Seniors produced a tremendous team performance on Friday night to beat a battling Clann a Banna in McCartan Park by 0-13 to 0-5. The Blues had Conor and Cormac OToole in tremendous form at the back and County Star Dan Gordan dominating midfield with John McCarthy proved unbeatable on the night. Up front Conor OReilly and Ryan Stranney helped produce some effective movement and team scores that keeps them in contention for promotion and now lie in joint second. Laitroim are the next visitors on Thursday night.
  • The U16 Boys hosted Downpatrick in an entertaining game this week. The visitors made a great start & the 'Island lads found it hard to contain their tall strong players in the middle third of the pitch. As the game wore on the home team came more into the game & pegged over a few nice scores but at the final whistle the RGU lads were worthy 7 point winners with a scoreline of Loughinisland 2-7 Downpatrick 2-14. Hugh Dornan & Dean McLoughlin had good games in defence, Gary Stranney worked hard in midfield, & Calum Noade & Justin Barlow were the scorers in the forward line.
  • Loughinisland Legends: Saturday evening saw the Loughinisland Legends take on Clonduff in a challenge game for former players. Among the legends on show were Des & Boondy Mason, Gary & Damien Mason, Gerard Trainor, Maxi McLeigh, John Killen, Paul 'Rhino' Rice, Seamus 'Sticky' McGlew, Aaron 'Bear in the square' McKeown, & Sean 'Never lost it' Digney. Appearing on the Clonduff side were Peter Withnell & Paul McShane. It proved to be a good game with plenty to entertain the substantial crowd. There were some great scores from both sides. The 'Legends' take on Teconnaght next saturday as part of the fun day. Best wishes to Nicky O'Neill who sustained a nasty injury.
  • Under 10s Loughinisland made history this weekend. The Club fielded two u10 teams in the 11 a-side competitive blitz at An Riocht, Kilkeel. They continued their successful run this season with another great series of performances. The squad played in a competition with 43 teams from all over Ulster and beyond.

Team1 - Loughinisland Lemurs, captained by Peter McMullan, played in a tough group of five teams and were unbeaten throughout to top Group G and progress to the top 16 Cup competition. Captain Peter showed exemplary commitment returning temporarily from his family weekend away in Dublin to lead the Loughinisland Lemurs out at An Riocht against Dromiskin (Louth) in a very tough first game. County Tyrones Moy put it up to our guys next but the team proved their resolve with a resilient display to take the spoils. The remaining Group games were a little more comfortable for the Blues Lemurs.

The Lemurs goalkeeper, Aaron Cooper made some impressive saves at crucial points in games to keep the Blues confidence up. His quick thinking and distribution was consistently sound.

Defensively, the team were very strong with Oran Bolton, Tom McDonald, Eddie Nixon and Conor Dornan who together kept the oppositions scores to a minimum displaying some superb teamwork, and determination to set up several scoring attacks for the Blue Lemurs.

Peter McMullan and Brandon Boyd won a lot of ball in midfield with some great catches and tenacious scrambling to win loose balls for their team-mates. Peter and Brandon connected well with some impressive penetrating one-twos that led to what looked like effortless scores.

Up front, it was Aine Smyth who shone, particularly in the game against Clonduff, when she bagged three fabulous goals out of the teams 9-04 to 0-2 impressive win. Dara McDonald, although lining out as a forward, played as a third midfielder to support his team-mates by winning some crucial possession while suffering several heavy challenges on the way. Stefan Ginesi and David Forsythe partnered well in front of the opposition goal and scored several memorable goals and points between them when the team needed it most.

The Loughinisland Lemurs were extremely unlucky to be beaten by Kilcoo A team by a single point losing 2-02 to 1-04 in what was a very closely contested knockout match. With 5 minutes each way there just wasnt time to recover from Kilcoos second goal.

This was a really great test for this progressive u10 team who have now suffered their first defeat of the season (and only by a single point). The teams loyal supporters were really impressed by their team spirit and tenacity as they came from behind to win some tough games. The parents again turned out in numbers and provided excellent encouragement for both teams who were all a little disappointed at the outcomes but remain confident as a squad for the future.

Team 2 - Loughinisland Lions, played against An Riocht, Shamrocks, Dromara and Finigallians. These young u10 Lions showed great heart against bigger opponents and came out roaring in the opening game against local rivals Dromara with an impressive win. The team progressed to the Shield competition and again performed well but lost out to stronger opposition on the day.

The Blue Lions defence was held together tightly with Shea OToole putting in a strong performance in goal, Oisin Cassidy and Dillan Owens defended with courage and pace. Joseph Kennedy, Rory Smyth, and Damian McDowell played with boundless energy in several positions demonstrating their improving skills and teamwork. At Midfield Brian Kennedy, Peter Kearney and Odhran Barlow stepped up to the mark to win valuable possession for the young Lions with some great catches and passing forward. Fearghal MacManus, Jamie Boyd, still as u8s, used this development opportunity to prove that they were not out of place as u10s with some impressive passing and shooting skills to add to the Lions tally.

The whole squad performed really well and represented the Club in a way that would make anyone proud. Their sportsmanship and discipline, which was tested with a few ambiguous decisions, was a credit to the Loughinisland Club. The Club are very proud of your performances and sportsmanship. Keep up the hard work guys.

  • The Seniors had an entertaining battle with local rivals Downpatrick on Friday night. The blues started the brighter and both teams played some fast moving football in the heat. By half time it was all square. The lead changed hands several times during the second half and Downpatrick had a slim lead going into injury time however a point from Ryan Stranney ensured a share of the spoils the teams now sit in 2nd and 3rd place in the league and still chasing a promotion place.
  • Under 10s The Under 10s travelled to St Pauls, Holywood, and continued their successful run with another three great performances at the Blitz on Saturday. The squad of 18 played as professionally as they looked in their new personalised windcheaters.

The competition was played on an 11 a-side basis with regular interchanges made in all games to ensure everyone got plenty of game time. The squad played really well as a team throughout the competition building on the skills and teamwork that they have learnt in training.

Dara McDonald provided great leadership and example as captain with some great catching and pinpoint passing from Midfield.

The Blues goalkeeper, Aaron Cooper was solid as a rock between the posts, only conceding a single goal in three games, and providing excellent distribution to his teammates throughout the competition. Defensively, the team were very solid led by Oran Bolton and Tom McDonald who directed operations very effectively and killed off several attempts on goal. Other great performances came from Damian McDowell, Odhran Barlow and Stefan Genesi who made several great supporting runs to work the ball up for some great scores.

Peter McMullan, Eddie Nixon, and Brandon Boyd made some incisive runs connecting well with team mates to work the ball forward into great scoring positions. They made several unselfish passes from midfield to their younger teammates Conor Dornan, Jamie Boyd and Feargal MacManus who showed great confidence and finishing ability. Michael Clarke was a tower of strength at full forward shaking of defenders to take two fabulous goals in the opening game. Rory Smyth and Shea OToole also demonstrated great determination adding to the blues scoring tally with some rocket shots over the bar.

The Kennedy brothers, Joseph and Brian, gave great performances in several different positions throughout the day showing their enthusiasm and flexibility.

The u10 Management team would like to thank the parents, and the growing supporters network who continue to provide great encouragement for this young squad week in week out. The whole squad is improving and some players are beginning to show great potential for the future. Keep up the hard work guys, those senior jerseys are waiting for you.

  • The U10 boys The under 10s began their pre-season preparations with three strong performances at home on successive Saturday mornings recently against Bryansford, Dromara and Kilief. This preparation stood the team in good stead for their first u10 blitz competition which was hosted last Saturday by Aughlisnafinn.

The available squad of 17 played as a single team on an eleven a side basis with regular interchanges in the four games. The team performed really well demonstrating excellent skills, teamwork and discipline. Captain for the day Conor Dornan led the team with great energy against Castlewellan, AughlisnaFinn, Dundrum and Bright. Stefan Ginesi played an excellent defensive role with some great body catches and really strong blocks when under pressure. Eddie Nixon leapt to great heights to outcatch his opponents in the middle of the park, while his team mates, Rory Smyth, Tom and Dara McDonald and Shea OToole took some decisive scores to keep the opposition on their toes.

Congratulations to the whole squad who are really working hard as a team unit and are developing at an impressive pace. Keep up the good work lads... Up the Blues!

  • The U16 boys lost to neighbours Drumaness at home. Missing several key players & with a man sent off early it was always an uphill struggle. The Loughinisland lads managed to keep the first half competitive, only a point down at half time but as the game wore on the visitors made their extra man count. In the end Drumaness were too strong & were convincing winners. The home team can take some positives in the heart & attitude that some players showed under pressure late in the game. Fergal Murray had a great game in his first start of the season. With only Cill Breachtain to play before the break the lads are still well placed in the league & can look forward to the championship.
  • Minors: travelled to Mayobridge for a tough & sometimes physical game. On a blustery evening it was the home side who took the first half initiative. Playing with the wind they dominated all sectors & made Loughinisland work hard for anything they got. Goalkeeper Chris Turley prevented them going into the break with a bigger margin than the score on 0.8 to 0.3. The Loughinisland lads came back into the game with the wind behind them second half. Rory Mason picked off three nice scores & David Smyth was involved in some good play including a score of his own. Johnny Flynn found the going tough at midfield but managed to score three points. The final score was Mayobridge 0.18 Loughinisland 0.10.
