  • All County Junior Ladies League: Loughinisland 4 6 Tullylish 0 -14 With a fantastic team display the Loughinisland ladies defeated Tullylish at St Macartan Park on Sunday, 7th November. So much was riding on this game as the winners would gain promotion to the Intermediate League. It was also important for the fact that this would stop Tullylish doing the league and championship double. A first half goal from Brenda Valentine gave the ladies that extra bit of encouragement of knowing that this could be their day. Tullylish, however, were relying on points as the strong blanket defence of Briege Cassidy, Maureen Brennan, Carol O'Hare, Ciara Cochrane, Natalie Savage and Laura McClements prevented the Tullylish attack creating any worthwhile goal opportunities and any time that they did break through they could not find a way past the Loughinisland goalkeeper, Helen Rice. Loughinisland were two points up at half time but they knew that Tullylish would come back strong in the second half. However the blues had a real thirst for victory and were not to be denied. In the second half. Briege Cassidy, player of the match, did a great marking job on the Tullylish key forward, Emma Drainey and as in the first half the Tullylish attack were limited to taking points when they really needed goals to have any chance of victory. Midfielders Gemma Gibney, team captain, and Laura Mason had fantastic games covering every blade of grass. They won a lot of possession and provided their forwards with plenty of good ball where Brenda O'Hare, Brenda Valentine, Bethan Carville, Bronagh Murray and Rebecca McKelvey were always showing for the pass. Full forward Lisa Toman caused huge problems for the Tullylish defence and was a constant goal threat every time she got the ball. This victory was a real team effort and all seventeen players utilised on the day played their part. Thanks to all those who have supported the Ladies during 2010. Thanks especially to the management team of Collie Flynn and Oonagh Cochrane and the entire squad of players who got their reward for all the hard work that they have put in throughout the season.
  • This years senior presentation night will be held on Saturday 11th December in the clubrooms. All senior players and committee members will be contacted shortly to nominate their choices for the various awards.

31st October 2010

  • Our ladies had an excellent victory over Saul in the junior league on a scoreline of 3 14 to 1 -5. This win now means that they play Tullylish in the league decider next Sunday, November 7th at home, with the winners also gaining promotion to the intermediate league. We would ask all members to come out and support the team in this important match. The ladies have had a great season and for them to win the league and get promoted would be a great boost for the club. We also wish Natasha Laverty, one of the Saul players, a speedy recovery from the injury that she incurred during the match and hope to see her back on the playing pitch very soon.
  • The annual U14 Girls tournament took place on Saturday 23rd with six teams participating. Bryansford won the Eileen Flynn Memorial Cup in defeating Burren in the final while Loughinisland won the Choice Kitchen Shield after an extra time victory over Kilcoo. 12th October 2010

  • U16s: Commiserations to our U16s who failed to win the all county B title last week after going down to a five point defeat to Burren last Friday evening in Bryansford. The team battled for the full hour but just lacked the forward power to get the required scores to defeat a very well balanced and physical stronger Burren team. Man of the match for Loughinisland was Ryan Mason in goals who pulled off at least four point blank saves to deny Burren certain goals. This has been a great season for the U16s and great thanks is due to their management team of Frank McLeigh, Raymond McClements, Gerry Morgan and Sean Digney. The bulk of this team now move up to U18 next season and if they continue to develop as they have over the last few years we can look forward to continued success with this squad.
  • Our seniors outside hope of getting into the top three playoffs for promotion from Division 2 were dashed on Sunday afternoon after a 1-15 to 0-08 defeat to Warrenpoint. With two games left it is imperative that they put this poor performance behind them and concentrate on maintaining their top five position to ensure their inclusion in the senior championship next year.
  • Ladies Well done to our Ladies who after a strong second half display overcame St Michaels in the All County Junior League. This win keeps the team on track in their bid to win promotion to the Intermediate league next season.
  • Congratulations to club member Collie Flynn, in his role as part of the Drumaness management team, on winning the county junior championship. Collie is also the team manager of the Loughinisland ladies team and we wish him continued success with Drumaness in the forthcoming Ulster championship.
  • Halloween fancy dress in clubrooms on Saturday 30th October admission 5 for those in fancy dress and 10 for those not in fancy dress.

  • Well done to our senior reserves on a excellent performance in defeating Burren reserves in the All County Premier Reserve Division One league fixture. 30th August 2010

  • Congratulations to Dan Gordon and Down on reaching the All Ireland Final after they defeated Kildare in what was a brilliant performance from everyone involved in the team.
  • U-16 boys Congratulations to the U-16 boys who won the East Down B Championship final when they easily defeated Saul by 4-14 to 1-05. This was a great team performance from the boys. First half goals came from Rory Mason, Peter Cochrane and Sean O'Reilly left them leading at half time 3-11 to 0-3. Although they didn't score as much in the second half, they ran out comfortable winners in the second half with a Sean O'Reilly goal from the penalty spot sealing the victory. They now go forward to play in the All County U-16 B Championship final against either Burren or Mayobridge at a date yet to be arranged. A word of thanks to their management team of Frank McLeigh, Sean Digney, Gerry Morgan and Raymond McClements. The Ladies Senior team lost to Tullylish in the Junior Championship Final 4-07 to 2-04. Tullylish led 4-6 to 1-1 at half time. The Island girls held Tullylish to just one point in the second half, but luck wasn't on their side. It was just a pity that both the U-16 final and the Ladies final were on at the same time, on the same day.

  • Walking/Jogging/Running Club: Seven joggers braved the elements to become the first initiates of the Loughinisland jogging/walking club. Spirits were not dampened by the rain. The pack split into two groups, one walking and jogging intermittently, and the other jogging the entire lap around the lake. Our second meeting saw a few new joggers and a few walkers. We had a lovely evening that even had a bit of sunshine! This time the pack split into 3 groups to accommodate walkers. Meetings for the next few weeks will be on Mondays at 7:00 pm at Castlewellan Lake. We'd like to invite anyone and everyone interested to come and see what we are about. The setup of our club is aided by Joe Quinn of East Down Athletics and Cathy Crawford of Athletics NI, so we have plenty of knowledge and support. We'd stress that no one is too unfit or too slow. Don't wait to get fit before you start coming.... come and get fit with us! We welcome all. Any questions please contact Fergus Gordon.
  • The Senior team's push for promotion to the top flight of Down football suffered a slight setback when they lost at home to Warrenpoint on a scoreline of 2-6 to 1-18. In the third quarter goals from Paddy McKenny and Ryan Stranney reduced the deficite. Warrenpoint pushed on with Ross McGarry in top form, finishing with a personal tally of 1-9, as Warrenpoint ran out easy winners.

Cill Breachtain went in at half time only a point down but in the second half the Loughinislands lifted their game & showed real class, determination & pride in their jerseys. Goalie Ryan Mason played well & distributed the ball inteligently & was on hand when needed with some good saves.Damhan O'Toole & Declan Corrogan defended well as did captain Philip Martin who was one of the star players. Midfielders Sean Cochrane & Niall McClements won the battle around the middle particularily in the second half. They also bagged a goal each. Rory Mason was top scorer with 5 points just ahead of Aaron McClements with 4. This was a great team performance with subs coming on to make major contributions. The final is against Saul in what will be a tough encounter with both teams so far unbeaten in the league. All club members & friends are asked to support the lads at the final.
  • The Ladies Senior team qualified for the next round of the championship when they defeated Tullylish.
  • The minor team were unlucky recently to loose to Bryansford by a late goal. The final score was Bryansford 2.10 Loughinisland 1.10. Conor O' Reilly was top scorer with 5 points with Rory King, John Cassidy, & Conor Megoran also getting on the score sheet. Gary McClements had his best game of the season in the middle of the park with Davy Smith also showing well. In defence Paddy Megoran did an excellent job man-marking Bryansford senior & County Minor player Danny Savage. Mickey Brannigan & Declan Corrigan gave good performances at half back with Declan grabbing the goal. Cormac Deegan came on to do a great job at corner back. Loughinisland Minors travelled to Ballykinlar to play St Joseph's in the league on tuesday past. On a good night with a great playing surface both teams played their part in a great game. Over the course of the game the 'Island lads were a bit stronger in key positions & at the end they won with a bit to spare. Davy Smith had a great game in defence & was unlucky when on two occasions he went upfield only to see his efforts come back off the posts. Peter Byrne as ever was a rock at full back. Johnny Flynn had a good game in midfield particularily in the second half when he was very influential. It was up front the Loughinisland really won the game.Full forwards John Cassidy & Conor O'Reilly were really on form scoring 5 points & 4 points respectively. Mickey Brannigan grabbed 1.5 from the half forward line. Every starting player played their part with subs coming on to contribute also. Declan Corrigan came on at half time to score another important goal.
