11th October 2009

  • Loughinisland U12 Boys were delighted to be invited to the annual U12 gaelic tournament , held at Darragh Cross , on Saturday. Despite missing several of their mainstay players the boys competed brilliantly and after some great performances , Dean McLoughlin lifted the cup, on behalf of the team The first group game was played against Dromara and the Island boys soon got going with points from Rory Deegan and his cousin Conor Cassidy .Rory Mahon provided a long ball outlet for the team and the boys used this tactic with great effect , whilst at the same time the backline marshalled by Conal Fay stood firm .In midfield Declan McClements and Dean McLoughlin worked their socks off , chasing every ball . In the second group game the Island boys were pitted against a much fancied Downpatrick team , however the boys weren?t going to be undone and it would be fair to say that the boys controlled the game from start to finish .Again the Island defence , mopped up everything that came at them , with Padraic Teague and Jordon Murray outstanding , whilst Hugh Dornan playing a defensive midfield role provided additional cover for the back line . As with the first game the forward line was on fire , and the boys eventually ran out comfortable winners . The third group game against the hosts Darragh Cross was hard fought , no ground being given by either team .The Island boys resolve was again tested , but a vital point from Conor Gordon seen them through .Special mention must go to Bailey O Connor , Andrew Boyd and Rory McKelvey who all played their hearts out during this match . The final game of the tournament was against a physically strong Dromara team and this proved to be the game of the tournament .Barry Forsyth pulled off a couple of excellent saves just when his team needed it but it was Peter Boyd playing in midfield who stole the show .Peter truly is a team player and despite being exhausted from his tireless running throughout the tournament he dug deep and gave a man of the match performance .In the end the Island boys won the match with a bit to spare .Finally , the club would like to extend their congratulations to the boys. Well done!

  • Loughinisland U12?S travelled to Carryduff on Sunday morning and a hard match was anticipated .The match was played in great playing conditions and indeed the Island Boys were made very welcome by the home team . The Island Boys didn?t waste any time from the throw in , and took the game to Carryduff straight away .The boy in form at the minute is Conor Cassidy and he opened the scoring within two minutes .Chris Noade , who was playing at left half back followed up with another well taken point , before Conor Cassidy pointed again .The Island Boys had started brightly and this continued through the first half with further points from Chris Noade , and Conor Gordon before goals from Rory Deegan and Fergal Murray wrapped up the first half proceedings .Half time score Carryduff 0.0 Loughinisland 2.8. Its true to say the Island Boys took their foot of the throttle in the second half and indeed let Carryduff back into the game .However the Island defence stood firm with brilliant displays from Peter Boyd , Tiernan Khalili , Hugh Dornan and Padraic Teague who is really turning out to be a great find for the team . Final score Carryduff 0.0 Loughinisland 3.10

  • The Senior team: Congratulations to the Senior team who have qualified for the Championship final after they defeated Clonduff on Friday night on a scoreline of 3-6 to 1-7. A Mark Valentine goal put the Blues 1-4 to 0-3 ahead at half time. Two goals in quick succession after half time from Ryan Stranney and Seamus O'Hare put the Island 11 points up. They will now meet East Down rivals Kilcoo who beat Burren 0-12 to 0-10 in the final on Sunday 4th October. This pairing has the potential for a classic final. We wish Gerard Colgan and the boys every success in the final.
  • A press night will take place in the clubrooms Wednesday night at 7pm.
  • Loughinisland U12?s: played their first supplementary game away to Leitrim on Monday night .As usual a tough game was expected but the Island Boys dug deep and came away with a creditable win despite several of their main stream players missing . Playing with the wind in the first half the Island boys started brightly with points from Fergal Murray and Rory Mahon , followed by goals from brothers Dean and Aiden McLoughlin .Aiden had only been on the pitch a matter of seconds but he took his chance when it came and this seemed to set the tone for the rest of the match .Going into half time the Island Boys were leading 2.4 to 1.2. The home team started brightly in the second half , however it was the Island Boys who again took control of the game. Further points from Conor Cassidy who had an excellent game and that man Aiden McLoughlin were followed by well taken goals by Rory Mahon and Conor Cassidy.Special mention must go to Peter Boyd who is getting better game by game and Declan McClements who always leads from the front. Final score Leitrim 1.7 Loughinisland 4.7 Finally the U12?S attended a tournament in Castlewellan on Saturday where some of the best teams in Ulster sent teams to compete .After some great wins in the group stage the Island U12?S eventually lost out to Mayobridge in the Semi Finals of the cup competition .This was a great achievement by the boys and they can all be proud of themselves .Well done.
  • U-14 Girls: Best wishes also to the U-14 girls who beat Burren in the Championship by 4 points. They now qualify for the semi-final. They went through their league undefeated.

7th September 2009

  • McNamee Award: Click here to read a report on the Loughinisland GAC receiving the 2009 McNamee Award.
  • The Senior team: had two league outings during the week. On Tuesday night they defeated Leitrim at home by a scoreline of 1-12 to 0-10. The Fontenoys led by 0-5 to 0-4 at the short whistle. But the Blues turned in a great second half performance with the highlight being a Seamus O'Hare goal following a great four man move. On Friday night they played out a 1-9 each draw at home to Kilcoo. Scores were hard to come by in the first half. Both teams probably had their eyes on the up and coming Championship semi-finals. The sides were level at 0-4 each at the short whistle. A Gareth Johnson goal three minutes from time looked to have won it for the Blues. Many thanks to the members of Glasdrumman for the invite to their inaugural tournament. • Loughinisland U12?s played at home against Dromara on Sunday and although the day was wet and windy the football was played at pace with the Island Boys brilliantly running off the ball and playing as a team . There are no stars in this U12 side, just hard working boys who make space, move off the ball, support and give their team mates an option, which is testament to their hard work at training and willingness to learn. The final score against Dormara was Loughinisland 6.13 Dromara 0.6 , with no less than 10 of the Island Boys scoring .This superb result follows 25 point wins over St John?s and Castlewellan respectively. A Gavin Morgan first half goal had the Blues leading at half time by 2 points. The Island manager Pat Gibney introduced Joshua O'Hare and Rory Mason at half time. Joshua O'Hare had a great second half when he hit four points. Bryansford had the better exchanges in the early stages of the second half and with five minutes left, they led by two points, but the young blues hit 3 points without reply to secure a narrow one point victory. They now go on to meet Bredagh in the next round of the U-16 Championship. The U-16's also recorded a 1-10 each draw away to St John's in the East Down U-16 league. A Gary McClements goal looked to have won it for the blues. But St John's equalised in injury time.

  • U18s ? Their first round game of the All County Minor Championship away to Clann na Banna which was postponed two weeks ago has now been refixed for this Tuesday. The squad has had an unfortunate run of injuries since the beginning of the season and will find the trip to Banbridge a tough assignment.
  • The minors recorded their first win in the league with an excellent performance at home last Tuesday to Castlewellan. Fielding eight of the U16 squad they showed a great determination and a will to win which the visitors could not match. There were strong performances from Eamon Cochrane and Raymond Nixon in defence, Johnny Flynn at midfield and Conor Megoran in attack. In what has been a difficult start to the season for the team this win hopefully will be the start of their climb up the league.
  • U16s ? Castlwellan 0 ? 13 Loughinisland 0 ? 6 Despite a brave battling display the U16s suffered their third league defeat in Section A of the East Down League. This was always going to be a difficult game to win and with some of their more established players not playing up to their usual standard, it made the task insurmountable. Only for the excellence of goalkeeper Chris Turley, the winning margin would have been much greater.
