  • U12s - No game last week
  • U14s - East Down League - Loughinisland 0 - 7 Darragh Cross/Killyleagh 1 - 5 For the second game in a row the U14s were on the wrong end of a one point defeat. This was a game they should have won as they had numerous opportunities, particularly in the second half, to take points but persisted in going for goals and even when the goal opportunities presented themselves some wayward shooting resulted in bad misses.
  • U14s - East Down League - Loughinisland 1 - 3 Carryduff B 1 - 5 As has been the problem all season lack of scoring power in attack resulted in a very disappointing defeat to a team that they had earlier in the season completely overwhelmed. In the game a lot of the players were guilty of taking too much out of the ball and repeatedly possession was lost when opportunities were available to set up team mates for scores.
  • U16s East Down League - Loughinisland 2 - 4 Downpatrick 4 - 7 In their final league game a depleted blues were defeated by a better balanced Downpatrick team. At half time Louginisland held a one point lead but in the second half it was a rear guard action as the town team took control and won convincingly at the finish.
  • Minor team click here to see photo's of our winning team (East Down 'A' league).
  • The Senior team will play Leitrim and either Bryansford or Castlewellan in the relegation play offs.
  • Congratulations! to our neighbouring clubs Downpatrick and Drumaness who have reached the Intermediate and Junior championship finals respectively.

3rd September 2007

  • Loughinisland GAC Golf Classic - Don't forget! This years golf classic will take place on Friday 14th September at Downpatrick Golf Course. The cost is 120 per 4 ball, which includes complimentary dinner in the club house afterwards. To book you tee-off time please contact Geard Martin, Gerry Toman, Martin Toman or any committee member.
  • U10s Tournament this Saturday at Downpatrick. All players to be at the pitch for 9.15am for transport to the RGU grounds. Training continues each Monday evening at 5.45pm.
  • U12s No game last week
  • U14s East Down League Leitrim 2 8 Loughinisland 2 - 7 This was a very disappointing result for the U14s as they were in contention for second place in the league and must now beat the Darragh Cross/Killyleagh combination to have any realistic chance of taking the runners up position.
  • U16s East Down League Neither Downpatrick or the referee fielded for this game. There appeared to be some confusion as to what fixture was due to take place.
  • U18s East Down League Loughinisland 1 12 Carryduff 2 - 6.
  • Pride of place this week goes to the Minor team on winning theEast Down 'A' league. They defeated Carryduff on a scoreline of 1-12 to 2-6. After winning the 'B' league last season, they continued on where they left off, by going through their league campaign undefeated. It was a proud moment for Chris McNamara when he accepted the trophy on behalf of the team from East Down Chairman PJ McAlinden. The Down Minor manager, Mark Turley was also there. No doubt, a few of these lads will feature in his plans next year. Credit also goes to Aidan O'Toole and Damian Mason who have worked so hard during the year. A word of thanks also to the team sponsors.
  • The Senior team could only manage a draw against Bryansford on Friday night. We now find ourselves in a relegation play off with two other clubs to decide who drops into Division Two.

28th August 2007

  • Loughinisland GAC Golf Classic - This years golf classic will take place on Friday 14th September at Downpatrick Golf Course. The cost is 120 per 4 ball, which includes complimentary dinner in the club house afterwards. To book you tee-off time please contact Geard Martin, Gerry Toman, Martin Toman or any committee member.
  • The Senior team failed to make the semi-final of the championship when they lost narrowly to Bryansford in Downpatrick on Saturday evening on a scoreline of 0-11 to 0-10. They went in at half time, trailing by 0-8 to 0-5. A serious injury to Ryan Carville, five minutes into the second half didn't help their case. Having said that, they fought back bravely to tie the game 0-9 each with ten minutes remaining. But the 'ford pressed on to win by the narrowest of margins. Incidentally, the final league game of the season is away to Bryansford. The result of this game, and other results will determine whether we will escape the relegation play offs. We wish a speedy recovery to Ryan Carville. Get well soon also to Mark Rice who is recovering in hospital after a road accident.
  • The East Down Under Age Championship finals will take place next Saturday in McCartan Park. Alot of help is required to help stage these finals. Stewards are needed for car parking duties etc.

    ISLAND LOTTO RESULT 22-08-07

    NUMBERS 2, 7, 16, 21

    4 people with 3 numbers - each receives 13

Michael Breen, Isobel McMullan, Hugh O'Prey, Roisin O'Hare

    This week's jackpot is 3,700.

20th August 2007

  • Loughinisland GAC Golf Classic - This years golf classic will take place on Friday 14th September at Downpatrick Golf Course. The cost is 120 per 4 ball, which includes complimentary dinner in the club house afterwards. To book you tee-off time please contact Geard Martin, Gerry Toman, Martin Toman or any committee member.
  • U10s Local rivals Drumaness travelled to play a friendly last Monday evening and if the number of young players who turned up is any guide line to the future strength of our underage teams the club can look forward to many years of continued success at juvenile level. The level of skill and team work were excellent from both teams and were a credit to both team managements. This Sunday the U10s are taking part in the Teconnaught Fun Day with a game against the home team. Training continues as usual each Monday evening at 5.45pm
  • U12s East Down Go Games - St Pauls were the visitors last Sunday and they found it difficult against a very strong Loughinisland team. The blues had find performances from Daniel Smith, Gary Stranney and Andrew Fairbairn. Both girls and boys U12s recently competed in the Castlewellan invitational tournament. This was a great experience for both teams as they got to play against teams from not only outside their own league but also teams from other counties.
  • U14s East Down League Saul 2 10 Loughinisland 2 4 This was a must win game for Loughinisland against the league leaders but on the day luck was not on their side and this defeat ends their league title ambitions. The big difference in the teams was that the Saul forwards could take their scores while Loughinisland missed numerous opportunities with poor shooting, particularly in the first half. At half time Saul were 1 6 to 0 1 ahead and despite a storming finish in the last quarter the blues could not pull back the deficit. Loughinisland has fine performances from Chris Turley in goals, Peter Byrne and Jonathan Turley in defence, Joshua OHare and John Cassidy at midfield. Goal scorers were Gary McClements and David Smith from a brilliantly struck penalty.
  • U15s Og Sport The club participated in this one day event at Newry last Saturday and acquitted themselves extremely well by getting to the shield final where they were defeated by Rostrevor. Thanks to Gareth King, Ben OReilly and James Grant for managing the team on the day.
  • U16s East Down League No game last week.
  • U18s East Down League Loughinisland 1 - 11 Leitrim/Dromara 1 6. This was an excellent victory for the minors against a physically stronger side. With Ben OReilly unable to play due to injury and the team captain, Christopher McNamara unable to resume in the second half, the team had to battle extremely hard to take the league points and preserve their unbeaten league record. Once again an excellent defence laid the basis for victory with Kieran Gordon in goals saving what looked like three certain goals for the visitors. Others to shine in defence were Raymond Nixon, Conor Corrigan and Paddy McKenny. Midfield struggled in the second half particularly after the loss of Chris McNamara, but Conor Killen and Aidan Nixon supplied sufficient ball to the forward line, in this period, to get the vital scores. In attack Conor McKenny and Michael Brannigan worked extremely hard with Luke Turley at full forward having one of his less effective days but still posing a threat every time he got possession.
  • Well done to the seniors who defeated Attical last Friday evening in their last home match of the season. Unfortunately this victory will probably not be enough to save them from the relegation playoffs. Next Saturday they play Bryansford in the last eight of the championship at Downpatrick, with a throw in time of 6.00pm.
  • New Club House The club would like to extend a word of thanks to all of the volunteers who assisted with the conversion of the first floor of the clubhouse into the new sports hall. It is much appreciated. The new dressing rooms on the ground floor will be open for use very soon. Work will continue on the building throughout the coming months. If you would like to assist this worthwhile project, please do no hesitate to contact Martin Keenan(co-ordinator) or any committee member.

  • U10s - travelled to Kilclief to take part in the latest East Down Blitz where their opponents were the home team and Teconnaught. Loughinisland fielded two teams in the tournament and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. A big thanks to their coaches John Nugent and Raymond Noade for the work that they are putting in at this level. Training continues each Monday evening at 5.45pm.
  • U12s East Down Go Games. Darragh Cross were the visitors to St Macartans Park and again the home team put in another encouraging performance and chalked up another victory.
  • U14s East Down League. Loughinisland 3 8 Leitrim 0 10 The U14s kept their league ambitions very much alive with this victory over Leitrim. Goals from Philip Martin, Declan Brennan and Philip Treacy were the vital scores in the match.
  • U16s - East Down League - In their most recent games an understrength blues drew with Leitrim in a game they should have won and defeated Teconnaught by three points in a very competitive game played at Teconnaught last Thursday evening. These results keep the team in third position in the league behind Bredagh and Downpatrick.
  • U18s - East Down League Loughinisland 2 6 Bredagh 0 9 The minors maintained their unbeaten record in this league with an excellent win against Bredagh. This was their first game in five weeks and though not their best display of the year this victory has put them in a great position to win the league. The two goals from Luke Turley came at the right times as Loughinisland struggled to find their best form and with lady luck also on their side they held on to pick up two very valuable league points and to inflict a serious blow to their oppositions league ambitions.
  • The Senior team - lost twice during the past week. On Monday night they suffered a two point defeat against Castlwellan 0-11 to 1-6. This is a game they should have won easily, but missed opportunities in the first half proved costly. On Sunday they lost to An Riocht 2-10 to 0-10. Trailing at half time 1-9 to 0-2 they put up a better showing in the second half and got back to within four points. But a breakaway goal by James Cunningham put An Riocht in the driving seat. Final score An Riocht 2-10 Loughinisland 0-10. These defeats leave us in the bottom four in Division One with just two games remaining we must win both and hope other results go our way to avoid the dreaded play-offs. The Senior team play Shamrocks in the first round of the Championship on Saturday evening at 5.00pm in Newcastle.
• The Senior team had mixed fortunes during their last two outings. They travelled to Mayobridge on Monday night. They suffered a twelve point loss. Mayobridge were on top in all departments, running out winners on a scoreline of 3-12 to 0-9. On Friday night they played host to Bryansford. They put up a great team performance to defeat the Ford by 0-14 to 0-9. James McClements and Ryan Stranney dominated the midfield sector. The direct football paid off. Ben O'Reilly and Niall McCarthy caused the Bryansford defence all sorts of problems. Friday night's match is away to An Riocht.
  • A warm welcome home to Seamus and Barry Brennan and their families who are home from New Zealand at the minute. Best wishes to their brother Mark and his fiancee Emma Pye on their forthcoming wedding.
  • The next committee meeting takes place on Tuesday 7th August at 7.30pm

2nd July 2007

  • U10s Training continues each Monday evening at 5.45pm.
  • U12s East Down Go Games. Loughinisland had their near neighbours Teconnaught visiting last Sunday morning and once again the team were victorious. Next scheduled game 29 July.
  • U14s East Down League Last weeks game against Carryduff B postponed due to the seniors match been brought forward to Thursday evening. This week Darragh Cross are the visitors with the game scheduled for Friday as all senior games have been brought forward to Thursday evening.
  • U16s East Down A Championship Loughinisland 2 5 Kilcoo 5 8 This was a game that Loughinisland thought they could not win and give far too much respect to the Kilcoo team who were very much on top in the first half. However with much more self belief in themselves in the second half the blues were a match for their visitors and only for a few fine saves from the Kilcoo goalkeeper, the scoreline would have been much closer.
  • U18s - East Down League The failure of the referee to turn up resulted in no game been played. This week they play Mayobridge at home in the all county championship and it will take a performance similar to that which they put in against An Riocht in the previous round for the blues to advance. The loss of Ben OReilly due to suspension is a huge blow but this team has shown their resilience all season in grinding out results with key players missing so a win on Wednesday is not beyond them.
  • The Senior team played out a draw against Clonduff on Thursday night 0-8 each. A heavy shower before the game commenced made the conditions very slippy. Trailing by 0-8 to 0-3 at half time they held Clonduff scoreless in the second half. They can consider themselves unlucky not to have taken the two points. This week's game is against Kilcoo at home. The game takes place on Thursday night. They then have a break until Sunday 22nd July when the league will recommence. The Senior team will play Shamrocks on Saturday 11th August in Newcastle. On the same bill will be Castlewellan against An Riocht.
  • The Minors play Mayobridge on Wednesday night in the minor championship.
Again there were excellent performances from our U10s and an enjoyable morning was had by all players. Training continues each Monday evening at 5.45pm. Next blitz scheduled for July 29th.
  • U12s East Down Go Games. Loughinisland travelled to St Johns and again returned victorious. Well done to all concerned particularly their coaches Michael Harte and Cormac OToole. Next game this Sunday at home to Teconnaught.
  • U14s East Down Championship Loughinisland suffered a heavy defeat against Bredagh in the second round of the A championship. After a good opening quarter in which they more than held their own with the visitors they were overwhelmed for the remainder of the game by the more physically stronger Breadgh team. This was a big step up in class for Loughinisland playing against the current leaders of Section A and they should not be too disappointed with this set back and can now focus on their league title ambitions. Next game this Thursday at home to Carryduff B.
  • U16s East Down League Carryduff B 2 3 Loughinisland 5 8 The blues travelled to Carryduff last Tuesday and though they won it was a substandard performance from the team overall. Only for Shane Walsh in defence and Paddy McKenny at midfield they could very easily have lost this game and defeat would have signalled the end of their league title ambitions. However they did win and they will certainly need to be a big improvement as they have important games in the next few weeks against Downpatrick and Breadgh in the league and Kilcoo in the A championship.
  • U18s - No game last week. Next match this Wednesday at home to Carryduff.
  • The Senior team recorded a win and a draw during the past week. On Monday night they registered a victory over Rostrevor in a very closely contested game, winning on a scoreline of 0-12 to 0-11. The turning point in this game came five minutes into the second half when John Gibney brilliantly saved a penalty from Sean Parr. On Friday night they drew with Longstone in a closely contested affair 1-10 to 0-13. This week's league game is on Thursday night, a home match against Clonduff.
  • The Minors have a home draw in the next round of the Minor Championship. They will play Mayobridge on Wednesday 4th July. This is a big game for them, so come out and give them your support.
  • New Club HouseThe club would like to extend a word of thanks to all of the volunteers who assisted with the conversion of the first floor of the clubhouse into the new sports hall. It is much appreciated. The new dressing rooms on the ground floor will be open for use very soon. Work will continue on the building throughout the coming months. If you would like to assist this worthwhile project, please do no hesitate to contact Martin Keenan(co-ordinator) or any committee member.

  • U14s East Down League Last weeks home game against Leitrim was cancelled due to the pitch being unplayable after the heavy rainfall. Bye this week.
  • U16s East Down League Last weeks game away to Leitrim was cancelled due to the minor championship game the following evening as nine of the team are also involved with the minors. This week the U16s travel to Carryduff.
  • U18s - All County Minor Championship Loughinisland 2 9 An Riocht 0 6. This was one of the finest performances by any of the clubs underage teams in recent years. Played in really difficult conditions they not only dominated An Riocht in every sector of the field, they also played as a team with great support play and some excellent scores. Their defence was magnificent throughout the whole game with James Grant at full back leading by example. At midfield Chris McNamara played a captains role and along with Conor Killen, who was playing his first game after a lengthly spell off due to injury, they give everything they had for the full hour and were instrumental in setting up some great attacking movements. Up front Ben OReilly and Luke Turley had great support from their wing players and were a constant threat every time they got possession. After a shaky start which saw them trailing by 0-1 to 0-4, at the end of the first quarter, they gradually worked their way back into the game and as their confidence grew they began to dominate and at half time lead by 1-5 to 0-4. The goal was a brilliantly worked move from defence up the left wing to Luke Turley who crossed a great ball to Paddy McKenny who had raced up from his half back position to collect the pass and score. An Riocht did mount a strong challenge at the start of the second half but were unable to score the goal that they needed due to great defending and as the half progressed they became more desperate while Loughinisland maintained their discipline and shape and picked off some fine points. The final nail in the An Riocht coffin was the second goal with Luke Turley getting his boot to a loose ball in the An Riocht full back line. Well done to all concerned with the team particularly the team management of Aidan OToole and Damian Mason. The minors have a bye this week in the East Down League. Good luck to the lads in the next round.
  • The Premier Reserve team lost out to Carryduff on a scoreline of 1-7 to 0-5. Leading 0-5 to 1-1 at half time they failed to score in the second half.

  • U14s East Down League The U14s travelled to Bredagh to play their rearranged match as the referee failed to turn up for the original fixture. The game though closely fought up to half time was completely one way traffic in the second half with Loughinisland taking complete control and winning comfortably in the end. Next match home to Leitrim.
  • U16s East Down League After easily defeating Ardglass in their championship game the U16s were expecting a much tougher game this time round but the Ardglass challenge did not really materialise and Loughinisland returned home with another two league points. Next game away to Leitrim.
  • U18s East Down League - Drumaness were the visitors to St Macartans Park last Wednesday evening and after a very competitive first half the game was their to be won by either team. However two late goals from Luke Turley sealed another fine win for the minors. This Wednesday An Riocht are the visitors for the rearranged first round of the minor championship. This will be a big test for the blues but if they play to their full potential they should progress.

  • Senior team lost at home on Friday night to Burren on a scoreline of 1-11 to 0-9. This was a disappointing performance. A defensive error let Burren in for a tenth minute goal. The Blues never really recovered from this blow. Although some fine points by Jamie O'Reilly and Seamus O'Hare left Burren just leading 1-5 to 0-7 at half time, but the Blues could only manage two points in the second period and Burren ran out comfortable winners by five points. The next league game is at home to Liatroim on Friday night.

  • U12s East Down Go Games Leitrim were the visitors this week and Loughinisland came out victorious on a scoreline of 2 8 to 1 -10.
  • U14s East Down League The U14s suffered their first defeat of the year when beaten 2 4 to 4 8 by Saul at St Macartan Park last Thursday evening. The teams were level at half time but the bigger and physically stronger Saul midfielders took complete control in the second half and restricted Loughinisland to two points while Saul amassed 3 3 in this period. Next match away to Drumaness.
  • U16s East Down League Loughinisland 0-7 Bredagh 1-8 In a very enjoyable game Loughinisland battled all the way against Bredagh but their failure to take the limited opportunities that they had to score resulted in their second league defeat and kept Bredaghs league campaign on course, as they are unbeaten to date. Next game away to Ardglass in the A championship.

Two Niall McCarthy first half goals sent The Blues on their way to a seven point victory over the Mourne team. • U16s - East Down League - Loughinisland 2 - 8 Teconnaught 1 -7. This was a very competitive game from start to finish and though the blues had the greater share of scoring opportunities the visitors ever give up and the outcome was in doubt right up to the end. Goal scorers for Loughinisland were Paddy McKinney, whose long range free went all the way to the net, and Conor O'Reilly who netted on the second attempt after his first shot was well saved by the Teconnaught goal minder.
  • U18s East Down League - Loughinisland 3 - 10 Teconnaught 1 - 6. Loughinisland were always in control of this game and by half time held a healthy lead of 3 - 4 to 0 -2 which was never really threatened in the second half. Full forward Luke Turley was the main focus of the home team's attack, particularly in the first half when he scored all three goals.
