The U-12's and U-14's teams enjoyed a great day out on Saturday on their
trip to Croke Park. On their way home they played St Mary's of Ardee in a
challenge game. A word of thanks to our county players Dan Gordon and Alan
Molloy who alog with other adults accompanied the team. A special word of
thanks to Benny Corrigan who put a lot of effort into organising the trip.
We would also like to thank the staff and customers of O'Toole's Bar who
organized a draw during the year with the proceeds goin towards the youth in
the club.
The great milestone of Loughinisland G.A.C's centenary year was marked by
the centenary ball over the weekend in the Slieve Donard Hotel, Newcastle.
Testament to the club's central role in the rural community of Loughinisland
was the turnout of over 400 people to the event. A magnificent night was had
by all. We were honoured to have past GAA president - Mr Peter Quinn as our
guest speaker for the evening who eloquently summed up what the GAA meant in
the everyday goings on of our own lives and how it in fact was a part of who
we are. Other members of the platform panel included County chairman Gerry
Quinn, Ulster Council Secretary - Danny Murphy, Chairman of the East Down
Board - PJ McAlinden, and Chairman of Down District Council - William
Clarke. Councillor Clarke presented the club with a Junior Club Mark award,
which was received by Mark Brennan and Conor O'Toole.
As proceedings got underway and members of the platform party gave their
respective addresses, subquently then the 1975 Championship Team were
presented with Championship medals. Further presentations were also made to
members of the club who over the years have been vital to the running and
development of the club into the century old hub of the community as it
stands today - Mrs Theresa Rogan, Vincent McGlew, Paddy Murray, Eamon
O'Toole and Hughie Dornan.
To receive an All Ireland Medal is a milestone in a Gaelic football career
which cannot go unrecognised and said winners received awards for such
successes: Jamie O'Reilly, Colin Mason, Gary Mason, James Sexton Fitzpatrick
and Noel McCarthy Senior.
To his surprise, but something which was wholeheartedly deserved Patsy Toman
was also presented with an award for his many and continuing years of
devoted service to the club.
I would like to take this opportunity to extend special thanks to Club
Chairman Gerry Toman, his daughter Lisa and vice-chairman Jim Mason as due
to their unfaltering energies and efforts we had such a momentus and
unforgettable centenary celebration. Here's to the next 100 years of our
much treasured Loughinisland G.A.C.
If anyone would like to have a permanent momento of our centenary ball then
they can contact our club PRO Patsy Russell on 029897561295.
Pride of place this week goes to the Senior team who had to work very hard
to gain a two point victory over a very tough Kilcoo side on a scoreline of
0-12 to 1-7. This victory means we won't be involved in the bottom three
play offs. We can now look forward to next season with great optimism. A
special word of thanks to the management team of Brendan Mason, Gerard
Martin and Paddy Dornan. A word of thanks to all our sponsors and
advertisers. Roll on 2007.
The U-12's and U-14's are going on a trip to Croke Park on Saturday 21st
October. It is hoped to play an U-12 and U-14 game against St Mary's, Ardboe
on the way home. Any player wishing to go on this trip must forward a
completed consent form to any of the U-12 or U-14 management team by
Saturday 14th October.
Patrons attending the Centenary Formal on Saturday 14th October in the
Slieve Donard Hotel are requested to be there at 6.45pm. This is a ticket
only event and it is completely sold out.
The game was played in very wet conditions. This means the Blues must now
defeat Kilcoo to be absolutely certain of not being in the bottom four
relegation play offs.

U10 forthcoming matches away to Dromara this Tuesday, 12 September. All
players to meet at pitch at 5.30am. Saturday 16 September away to
Drumaness at 11.00 am. Sunday 24 September away to Teconnaught at 11.00 for
the inaugural match for the "Corn Aisling Og" trophy sponsored by Dell
Northern Ireland. Training continues each Monday evening at 5.45am.
Season ends 24 September 2006.
U12 Go Games continue with three games left in the current season, away to
Dromara and home games against Kilclief and Saul. Training continues each
Saturday at noon.
U14s ended their season with a home defeat against Drumaness. Injuries to
key players had a big impact on the team's performances through out the
year. However there is great potential within this squad and while coaches
Conor O'Toole and Mark O'Reilly may have been disappointed not to have won
some silverware, particularly the B championship, this team will continue
to develop and be a force in the years to come.
U16 season is now completed and after a good start to their league campaign
the team eventually finished mid table. The team progressed to the second
round of the A championship where they were defeated by Kilcoo. The
highlight of the year was reaching the semi final of the Peter Walsh
invitational tournament, where the team put in some excellent performances
before being narrowly defeated by Rostrevor. Well done to lead coach James
McClements and his assistants, Luke Copeland and Cormac O'Toole for all the
time and work that they put into this team thoughout the year.
6th September 2006
The Under 8 team took part in a blitz at St John's last Saturday. They won
the first game 1-14 to 0-1 and the second game 0-9 to 1-0. All 10 players
played exceptionally well, a special mention to Declan McClements who scored
a grand total of 11 points. A big word of thanks to John Nugent and Raymond
Noade for looking after the U-8's and also for their involvement with the
U-10's.
There will be training on Monday evenings from 5.45 to 7.00pm
U-12's
Hosted Leitrim in the latest round of Go games and after another fine
performance the team proved too strong for the visitors while all the games
this year have not been strictly played to the original Go GAmes rules this
team has shown great potential and they have adapted well to the amended
rules. The next game is away on September 10th to Dromara. Training
continues each Saturday at 12 noon
U-14's
were defeated by Leitrim in this rearranged league game played at
Annsborough last Tuesday evening. With this defeat any possibility of
winning this section of the league have gone. The team have had an
unfortunate run of injuries to key players right from the start of the
season. The most recent injury to Rory King obtained in the C'ship final two
weeks ago, will put him out of action for the reaminder of the season and
also limit his involvment with the East Down U-14 squad. We wish him a
speedy recovery and look forward to having him and Shane Walsh back for next
season's campaign.
Senior team
Had a good win away to Rostrevor in the rearranged fixture on a scoreline of
1-9 to 0-11. Ben O'Reilly was the star of the show with a total of seven
points. Remaining fixtures are at home to Castlewellan and Kilcoo and away
to Annaclone. Next game on Sat 23rd September.

U-12s
Played St John's in the latest round of Go Games at St Macartan's Park.
Again it was another excellent performance from the home team who are improving game by game. The score taking was of a high standard as was the support play, from defence through to the forwards, with all players very comfortable on the ball and always looking for a better placed colleague.
Training continues each Saturday at 12 noon.
U16s
Travelled to Kilclief last Thursday with a somewhat understrength team, missing six of their regular players. However they were only defeated by a late penalty which gave Kilclief victory on a scoreline of 3-5 to 1-9. The goal scorer for Loughinisland was Killian Monan who had an impressive game at midfield particularly in the first half where he was well supported by Luke Turley.
The Senior team bowed out of the Senior Championship quarter final stage, going down to a well organised Clonduff team on a scoreline of 2-7 to 0-7.
This was a game where the blues never really got going. They badly missed Brendan Ward, Seamus O'Hare and John Turley. This match aside, they still have put up some great performances this season, and with four league games left there still is everything to play for.

The Minors went down to a very strong Rostrevor outfit in the quarter finals
of the 'A' championship on a scoreline of 6-16 to 0-4. Never the less they
still deserve great credit for getting this far in the competition. They now
enter the 'B' championship.
The Senior team travelled to Rostrevor on Friday night. The game was
unfinished owing to an injury to our player Seamus O'Hare. Rostrevor were
leading by 1-7 to 0-8, with two minutes remaining. This game will probably
have to be replayed. We wish Seamus a very speedy recovery.
The Seniors play Clonduff in the quarter finals of the Powerade Senior
Championship next Saturday evening in Newcastle. We will be without John
Turley who has went to Austrailia, Seamus O'Hare and Brendan Ward who is
still a major doubt. It will take a big effort to reach the semi-final. Our
last semi-final appearance was in 1991.

Blitz at St John's. The team was weakened by holiday absences but still won
two out of three of their games. Skill levels of every member is improving
game by game. Training continues on Monday evenings fro 545 to 700.
U-12's
Recently took part in the Castlewellan centenary 9-a-side tournament in
which 24 clubs participated - 16 in the boys event and 8 in the girls.
Loughinisland were grouped with Castlewellan, Dundrum, Annaclone and St
John's Bosco, Newry. In their first game they were defeated by Castlewellan
by one point, but then proceeded to have fine victories over Dundrum and
Annaclone. With two teams to qualify from the group it was down to their
final game against Bosco as to who would qualify. Loughinisland required a
win against the unbeaten Newry boys but it wasnt to be their day as the game
ended in a draw and Castlewellan and Bosco progressed to the knock out
stages of the main competition. The teams that failed to qualify for the
main competition took part in the shield competition and in this
Loughinisland were drawn against Carryduff. HOwever this appeared to be a
game too many for the team as they never really reached the level of their
previous performances and slumped to a four point defeat. Overall the team
performed excellently and well done to their coaches, James Perry and
Dominic McClements.
U-16's
V Bredagh. Scoreline Loughinisland 1-10 Bredagh 1-12. In a very
entertaining game the visitors held on to a win by two points in a keenly
contested game. A strong finish from Loughinisland in which Luke Turley
scored a goal direct from a 45 had Bredagh hanging on at the finish but
their defence held firm. Though fielding without four of their first choice
players this was a very encouraging performance from the blues with their
defence in particular being excellent but lack of firepower up front proved
their downfall on the night.
The U-14's played Leitrim in the final of the U-14 East Down B championship.
They were defeated by three points 1-9 to -1-6. The half time score was
1-7 0-4 to the Leitrim men. The blues to their credit played a lot better in
the second half and a goal from John Cassidy left it very close at the
finish, with Leitrim hanging on at the end to win by three points.
2nd August 2006
Pride of place this week goes to our minor team who qualified for the quarter finals of the Down Minor Championship after they defeated a very strong Carryduff team on a scoreline of 2-11 to 1-8. This was a great team performance with good displays coming from James Grant, Aidan Nixon, Conor Killen, Ben O'Reilly and Luke Turley. The Minor management team of Gary Gordon, Aidan O'Toole and Ciaran Fitzpatrick would like to thank the Senior team and all the players families for turning out in great numbers to support them. They now eagerly await the quarter final draw. And we wish them every success in their quest for Championship glory.
For the fourth time this season, the Senior team lost by a solitary point.
When they lost away to Longstone on a scoreline of 0-10 to 1-6. They got off to a great start with Mark Valentine finding the net after 3 minutes. By half time they led by 1-5 to 0-4. The Longstone manager, Frank Dawson pulled a master stroke when he sprang Barry Doran from the bench for only his second start of the season. Barry completely dominated the midfield sector in the second half. Longstone outscored the Blues six points to one, in the second half, to win by a single point. However, I still believe we are capable of getting out of the bottom four.

U-10's
Due to the construction work currently going on at the club, the Go Games scheduled for St Macartan's Park, last Saturday were changed to Ballykinler.
A very enjoyable day was had by all with some excellent performances both from individuals and the team which resulted in two wins from the three games played.
U-12's
Travelled to Saul for their latest round of the Go Games and the 'A' team had their most competitive game to date. Both teams were evenly matched with man of the match Paul Fisher in goals having an outstanding game. The 'B'
team also had an excellent work out and it was rewarding for all our players to get these two matches as not all teams in our section have fielded a second team.
U-14's
In this home game against Bright in the championship, Loughinisland had a very comfortable victory. They dominated their opponents in all sectors of the field and at half time, though playing against a stiff breeze, led by eight points and were never stretched in the second half. Next game scheduled for July 27th, which will be ain the championship.
U-16's
Championship game against Kilcoo postponed. League fixtures resume 25th July with an away game against Liatroim.
Senior Team
The senior team had mixed fortunes during the week. They lost away to Kilcoo on a scoreline of 0-12 to 0-8. But they had a very impressive home victory over Newry Shamrocks on a scoreline of 1-14 to 1-8. The next league game will be away to Longstone on Sunday 23rd July.

Congratulations to everyone concerned, particularly John Nugent and Raymond
Noade, the U-10 managers on the success of the games playd against Dromara
at St Macartan's Park. It was great to see such a large turn out of young
players. The games were played under the Go Games rules and were thoroughly
enjoyed by all.
U-12's
Travelled to Kilclief for their latest round of Go Games. Unfortunately the
home team were short quite a few players but a competitive game was played.
Well done to Dominic McClements on volunteering to referee in the absence of
the official referee.
U-16's
Loughinisland 2-11 Teconnaught 3-5
Teconnaught were the visitors for this league match and a strong
Loughinisland team had to pull out all the stops to eventually win by three
points. Both teams were evenly matched but the greater team work of the
Blues and their ability to take scores in the last quarter were decisive in
securing the league points for the home team. Best for Loughinisland were
Chris Turley in goals, who made a brilliant save at a vital stage of the
game to stop a certain goal, Raymond Nixon, James Grant and Paul Digney in
defence, Luke Turley at midfield and Ben O'Reilly in attack.
The Senior team put up a brave performance away to Burren on Friday night.
They led by a point with five minutes remaining, but a goal from James
McGovern sealed victory for the South Down men on a scoreline of 2-10 to
0-12.

U-12's

U-14's
Incurred their second defeat of the season away to Ardglass in the first round of the 'A' championship on a scoreline of 2-7 to 1-6. The team is now entered into the 'B' championship and with a full squad soon available. This team is capable ofo doing very well in this championship.
U-16's
Suffered a heavy defeat away to the League leaders, Carryduff who should be playing at all county level in this age group as they are far stronger than all the other teams in this league. However Loughinisland battled to the very end but were no match for the physically stronger Carryduff boys.
Congratulations to Laura McClements on winning an Ulster medal with the Down
U-14 team who defeated Tyrone in the Ulster 'B' championship final
The Minors advanced to the next round of the Championship when they recorded a nine point victory over Dromara with good displays coming from Mark Rice, Conor Killen, Ben O'Reilly, Jonathon Turley and Chris McNamara. All minor players are encouraged to train with the Senior team.
We wish them all the best in the next round of the minor championship.
The Senior team lost for the third time by a single point when they lost at home to Liatroim 0-8 to 0-7. This was a game that they could have and should have won. The fact that they kicked 14 wides and missed a penalty tells it's own story. If they keep losing matches like this they could find themselves in the relegation zone. Next Friday's match is away to Burren. Prior to the start of the game the awards for the 2005 season were presented to the following people.

U-12's
In the last three weeks have played Drumaness, St John's and most recently
Dromara under the Go Game rules. These games are 11 a side and played across
the normal sized pitch or on half of the full size pitch with special rules.
Usually because of the reduced numbers per game, two games take place at the
same time with the aim of giving everybody a full game. OUr games to date
have been very successful and for this great credit must be given to the
joint managers of James Perry and Dominic McClements.
U-14's
An understrength team suffered their first defeat in the league at home to
Drumaness. The panel have now lost Shane Walsh due to a wrist injury
sustained with the U-16s the previous week and this added to the injury
sustained by Conor O'Reilly in the second game of the season is a big blow
to their quest for honours this year. We wish both players a speedy
recovery.
U-16's
After defeating Drumaness in the first round of the championship the tables
were turned in the league encounter of last week. Even though the team were
short some key players due to examinations, the league match was there for
the winning, but a combination of lack of team play in the forwards and poor
shooting resulted in defeat.
The Senior team put up a battling performance away to Bryansford. They lost
on a scoreline of 0-11 to 0-9. Injuries to midfielders Joe Doran and Gary
Gordon didn't help their cause, considering we were missing seven players,
this was still a good performance. Next game is at home to Liatroim.

O'Reilly when he received the League shield from Sean McCashin. A word of
thanks must go to the management team of Gary Gordon, Aidan O'Toole and
Ciaran Fitzpatrick. The Minors can now look forward to a good run in the

The Senior team had a great victory over Rostrevor on a scoreline of 1-8 to
0-5. This was Rostrevor's first defeat this season. The victory was achieved
without our county players and Jamie O'Reilly who was injured. This was
great team effort. Joe Doran gave another magnificent performance, with good
displays from Matt Doran, Ryan Carville, Conor O'Toole, James McClements and
John Turley. The next game is away to Castlewellan

The U-16's had their first victory of the season when they defeated Leitrim
on a scoreline of 6-10 to 1-5. The Blues dominated in all sectors and with
the visitors down to 13 men for the last ten minutes. It was all too easy
for the Blues running out comfortable winners in the end. Best for the
winners were James Grant in defence, Paul Digney and Paul Fisher in midfield
and up front, Luke Turley and Ben O'Reilly were most prominent.
Ben O'Reilly and Luke Turley were part of the Down U-16 squad which competed
in the Golden Cow Youth games in Belfast
For the second time this season, the Senior team lost by a point. The
victors on this occasion were Clonduff. This was a game of two halves with
Clonduff dominating the first half. They led at half time b y 1-4 to 0-2.
The Blues were encamped in the Clonduff half for most of the second half.
But once again poor shooting cost the Blues dearly. A Cormac O'Toole fisted
goal three minutes from time left a point between the sides, but the home
team were left to rue their twelve wides over the hour. This week's game is
away to Mayobridge.
The Minors will win the league if they beat Bredagh at home tonight

The minors lost for only the second time this season, when they were
defeated by Bredagh in Belfast, on a scoreline of 2-10 to 1-5. They led at
one stage by four points. Bredagh hit the net twice in the second half to
run out winners by eight points. The final game will be at home to Bredagh
on Wed 17th May. If they win, they will win their league section. Don't
forget to give the lads yor support on 17th. Mark Rice and Chris McNamara
put in fine performances agianst Bredagh.
The U-14's were runaway winners against Dromara with good displays from
Shane Walsh, Brendan O'Neill and Michael Brannigan. They also took part in
the U-14 feile in Ballykinlar. They beat Teconnaught and lost out to
Ballykinlar.
The Senior Team had two great victories over Shamrocks and Longstone. They
beat Shamrocks by 0-10 to 1-6, and Longstone by 1-10 to 0-5 respectively.
These victories were achieved without our county players. The next match is
at home to Clonduff.

The U-16's lost away to Teconnaught on a scoreline of 2-10 to 4-7. It
looked promising for the Blues when they led by 1-8 to 1-0 at half time, but
Teconnaught found the net on three occasions in the second half to run out
winners by three points. Best for the Blues were Raymond Nixon, Shane Walsh,
Paul Fisher, Conor Corrigan and Paddy McKinney. Best wishes to Conor
O'Reilly who got injured during the game. We wish Conor a speedy recovery.
The Seniors lost their unbeaten record when they lost by a point at home to
Burren 1-4 to 0-6. Playing with the wind in the first half, the Blues failed
to score enough. They led by 0-3 to 0-1 at the short whistle. Burren hit the
front eight minutes into the second half with a breakaway goal by Ciaran
Doyle. Brendan Ward must have thought he had salvaged a draw for the Blues
when he hit a long range point at the end of normal time, only for Down star
Eoin McCartan who scored the winner for the South Down side with a pointed
free deep into stoppage time.
The Minors put in another great performance when they defeated Teconnaught
away by 4-9 to 1-5. The teams were evenly matched in the first half with the
Blues leading by 0-5 to 0-3 at half time. The Blues upped the ante in the
second half with Ben O'Reilly putting in a man of the match performance.
Jonathon Turley denied Teconnaught a goal when he saved a penalty. Mark Rice
also starred in defense for the Blues. They now have two very important
games coming up. Both against Bredagh.
Best wishes to Alan Molloy and Dan Gordon for Sunday's clash with Cavan in
Belfast. Also good luck to Jamie and Ben O'Reilly and Ciaran Gordon who are
involved with the Down minor squad.

Pride of place this week goes to Paul Fisher, who won an All Ireland
medal with St Malachy's Castlewellan in the U-16 Vocational schools All
Ireland final on a scoreline of St Malachy's 2-14 Rathmore of Kerry
2-7.
Congratulations to Paul and the rest of his team mates. Also their
coach PJ Magee. A magnificent performance all round.
U-16's - Loughinisland 1-7 Carryduff 6-12
This was always going to be a difficult game for Loughinisland and
though they battled hard, the Blues were always up against it. By half time
the game was effectively over, as Carryduff led by 2-7 to 0-2. However
great credit must be gien to the home team. Though physically
overpowered by the visitors, Loughinisland never gave up and fought to the end.
Best for the Blues were Chris Turley, James Grant and Paul Murray in
defence, with only Paddy McKinney posing any threat in attack.
The Minors continued on their winning ways with a 1-12 to 0-4 victory
over Ardglass. The defence broke up a lot of Ardglass attacks. Luke
Turley hit
1-3 and there were good displays from Connor McKinney, Chris McNamara
and Jamie & Ben O'Reilly. They now top their section and have three
games remaining. Teconnaught and Bredagh twice.
The Premier Reserve Team had a good victory over Tullylish on a
scoreline of
2-15 to 0-5
The U-14s had a good victory over Darragh Cross.
The Seniors recorded their second victory in the top flight when they
had a
0-12 to 0-8 victory away to Liatroim. It looked bleak for the Blues
when they trailed 0-4 to no score after sixteen minutes, but by half time,
they had tied up the game at 0-4 each. Second half scores from Jamie
O'Reilly (3) Dan Gordon(2) and points from Gareth Doran, John Turley and
Ben O'Reilly secured the victory. Keep up the good work lads.

They still have everything to play for in this league.
