  • The Seniors secured their place in Division One and next years senior championship with a 3 point victory over County Finalists Burren on Saturday evening. The blues were slow to start and the magnitude of what was at stake seemed to play on their minds in a first half that seen the forward line limited to a few chances, however a brilliantly worked goal by Aiden Nixon kept the blues in it and helped the team settle into their task however went in at half time 1-9 to 1-4 down. MacCartan park this year has been somewhat of a fortress and a half time chat injected some belief into the lads whose noticeable increase in workrate seemed to lift the team and the home supporters. Paul Digneys switch on to Burren danger man Donal OHare quelled the Burren scoring threat and with Ryan Stranney and Dominic McClements dominating in the midfield the forwards such as Rory Mason and the impressive County Minor Aaron McClements started to settle into the task of keeping Loughinisland in Division One.

The last fifteen minutes seen the boys in blue play their best football of the season and a goal from Aaron McClements and a wonder point from Rory Mason following great work from Player of the Season John McCarthy put the blues in the lead with five minutes remaining. Burren, as ever never laid down but strong resolute defending from the whole team and in particular Sean Cochrane, Jonny Flynn and the two O Tooles held the Burren strikeforce to 2 points in the whole of the second half and the blues held out for a deserved 3 point win. Final Score Loughinisland 2-11 Burren 1-11. The final League position was 10th and means well be 3rd seeds in next years championship.

Congratulations and well done to Kyran Smyth, Aidan Robinson, Brendan Ward, Raymond Noade and all those who contributed to the senior and reserve set up throughout the year.

  • The year 9s followed up their recent win over Castlewellan with a very impressive victory against Division 1 side Liatroim. There were no fewer than eleven different scorers for the blues, who ran out very comfortable winners on a scoreline of 4-12 to 1-03. Ronan Brennan was top scorer with two goals and put in a great shift, Oran Bolton finished with 1-02 and was a constant threat. Rory Smyth also got a goal and did well to set up scores for his team mates. Tom Mc Donald and Eddie Nixon each got 0-02, both lads also battling hard throughout. Dara Mc Donald, Oisin Savage, Michael Murnin, Conor Dornan, Peter Mc Mullan and Brandon Boyd all got 0-01 each and all played well in what was an impressive team display. Peter Kearney did well in goals, and was well protected by the full back line of Riley O Neill, Stefan Ginesi and Eoin Mc Cartan. Joseph Kennedy also did very well in defence as a second half substitute. Next up for the lads is Drumaness in the last round. This win gives the lads every chance of qualifying for the championship final. A big thank you to the parents and supporters, who turned up again in big numbers to cheer the boys on. Your support and dedication to this talented group is always appreciated.
  • The AGM will be held in November and the current Committee would like to appeal to anyone who feels they could contribute in any way to attend the AGM and contribute to the development of the club, on and of the field. The are lots of areas that we need to focus on; such as Team Management, Child Protection, Club Development, etc. Keep an eye on Twitter, Facebook and the Club Website for more details.

  • Reserves: Kilcoo 1-09 Loughinisland 0-09. The seconds fell to narrow defeat away to Kilcoo on Sunday. However they came away with their heads held high as they pushed the magpies all the way to the final whistle.

The most pleasing aspect of this game was the blues high level of work rate, tackling and all round team play. Given the opposition and venue the blues were well minded that any slip ups would be punished by this fast moving Kilcoo outfit.

The opening 10 minutes saw the blues soak up some early pressure however they hit 2 excellent scores on the break from the boot of Conor O'Reilly. The Kilcoo attack found it very tough going against a blues defence that was expertly marshalled by former Down great Alan Molloy. The presence of big Molloy seemed to instil a greater level of confidence throughout the entire blues rearguard with many of the boys playing out of their skins as a result.

Midway through the first half the blues had a great chance for a goal however they were thwarted by a great diving block on the line by the imposing Kilcoo full back. Far from taking the wind out of the sails the blues pushed on to fire over another 5 points before the break. Kilcoo never threatened the island goal in the first half and for the most part they lived of scraps and so the half ended with the blues leading 7 points to 5.

The second half started with the same level of intensity however on this occasion it was the magpies who registered the first score. Kilcoo upped their workrate and started to make it very difficult for the blues to move the ball out from the back to build any significant attacks. The middle part of the second half was scrappy with the blues fighting for every ball all over the field to ensure Kilcoo didn't get a run on them.

With 15 minutes to go and with the game a draw 7 pts each the magpies sprung their talisman Anthony Devlin from the bench. This switch ultimately proved to be the difference on the day as Devlin while initially well marked by the blues defence managed to fashion himself a clear sighting of goal and made no mistake ramming the ball home low and hard under the impressive Ryan Mason.

The blues didn't buckle and they registered the next 2 scores to leave a point between the sides. With minutes remaining and with the game in the balance the magpies managed to break clear and claim 2 very kickable frees and they made no mistake registering both to allow them to run out 3 point winners.

So that was it an away defeat however there were far more positives to take away form the game than negatives. Not least the fact that young Peter Nugent made his senior debut and contributed impressively, Molloy came out of retirement, Darren McMullan played his first game in a year and the blues put in their best defensive display all year.

Next up for the blues is a home fixture against the ford. The blues will now look to consolidate their 3rd place position in the league. As for Kilcoo this win propels them back to the summit of the table and they look odds on to claim another all county reserve league title - best of luck to them.

    Team: R Mason, O Teague, P Megoran, C Corrigan, P Digney, J Flynn, D McMullan, D O'Toole, Rory Mason, G Morgan, B Ward, P Martin, C O'Reilly, W. Russell, A Molloy. Subs P Nugent, Damien Mason, Capt. J Flynn

  • The U16 boys continued their unbeaten run in the league and championship with a 6 point win over Drumclone at Kilcoo in the championship quarterfinal on Saturday. The ever reliable Fergal Murray in goal, was well shielded by a typically strong performance from Peter Boyd, Hugh Dornan and Owen O'Neill in the full back line. The athleticism of Dean McLoughlin in midfield was complimented by great scores from his partner Conal Faye and the half back line of Conor Gordon, Ryan Bolton and Kieran Mckeating defended and pushed forward with menace, particularly in the first half. A resolute Drumclone team started the second half with renewed vigour but the Island forward line responded well with some well taken scores from Rory Deegan, Conor Savage and Rory Mahon. The towering Padraig Teague caused continual problems for the opposition with Gavin McDonald and Anthony Park working tirelessly. A magnificent performance was sealed with a great goal from Aidan McLoughlin,10 minutes from the end.

  • Loughinisland u14s lost out by a single point in the League Final after extra time at Ballykinlar last Wednesday night in a very close fought contest against a determined St Pauls side who just wouldn't give in. The Blues, captained by a determined Declan Mc Clements, lined out with six under 12s in their starting 15. The young pretender - Eddie Nixon - opened the scoring with an excellent point from play for the Blues. St.Paul's quickly equalised before Peter McMullan cut through their defence adding a second point. Gavin McDonald, at half forward, hooked a point over from distance sandwiched between two goals from Eddie Nixon and Oran Bolton.

    2013- U14's

Leading 2.3 to a point the writing seemed to be on the wall for the Holywood boys but with two goals from them in sixty seconds, one from a disputed penalty, and a another point from play, St.Paul's left the minimum between the sides approaching half time. Brandon Boyd scored a point narrowly missing the cross bar in what could have been another goal for the Blues at a critical point in the game. Aidan McLoughlin scored a great point after an impressive attacking run from midfield bringing the score to 2.5 to 2.2 for the Blues at the break. Whatever the St. Paul's managers said at half time should be bottled and sold as they hit the Blues for 3 points without reply. They then added 2 goals storming into a 6 point lead. The game was end to end at this stage and Loughinisland responded magnificently with goals from Aidan McLoughlin and Peter McMullan to level the match again. St. Paul's regained the lead before points from Eddie and Oran edged the blues in front by a point. St. Pauls equalised just before the referee blew the final whistle signalling extra time. The Blues might look at this as a missed opportunity having kicked 8 wides during the second half of the game to St Pauls 3 wides. However the extra time period was very close too with no score in the first period and a single point from St Pauls in the latter end of the second period to snatch the cup from the young Islanders.

Congratulations to St Pauls for a very competitive game in which they ran out deserved winners in the end.

  • Congratulations to John and Gayle Turley on the birth of their baby boy.

  • U-12 - League Champions! The Under 12 squad were up against it, away to Saul, in the final league fixture of the season to decide who would be crowned League Champions for 2013. Loughinisland came to the game unbeaten and Saul with only a single defeat - their earlier fixture against the blues. The return fixture, played in Saul, was shaping up to be a great encounter with an electric atmosphere. Both teams were clearly psyched up for the occasion as was clear from the aggressive roars and growls from the respective team huddles which would have put goose bumps on even the most chilled neutral spectator. The away fixture did not deter the avid Loughinisland supporters, including chairman (Gerry Toman) and several committee officials, from travelling in large numbers to cheer on this young team. Saul also had great support arriving in equal numbers to rally their lads for the big game.

The two teams looked and behaved very professionally throughout what was a very competitive and entertaining game. Clearly there must have been an All Ireland medal at stake, or so it seemed to those watching. The tackles were crunching from the outset but both teams played fair and the referee kept the game flowing and never had to look for his book once as the sportsmanship was exemplary from both sides. Loughinisland grabbed an early point to take the lead but Saul struck back immediately with a great goal. The game was only 2 minutes old but already it was living up to its high expectations. The Blues were not to be deflated by Sauls early goal. Peter McMullan played a captains role at midfield keeping Ruaire OHare from Saul as quiet as was humanly possible given his obvious talent and intense work rate, which was particularly impressive given Ruaires recent return from injury. Peter also showed his dynamism by scoring an excellent free kick from the left wing with his right foot. Brandon Boyd showed some great aerial skills at midfield and was ably supported by Dara McDonald and Eddie Nixon at critical stages of the game to ensure that the boys won the majority of possession from kickouts. Although conceding four goals Peter Kearney was a rock between the sticks and clearly saved the team from what would have been a much closer encounter by pulling off some excellent and courageous saves as Saul attacked with venom and at pace from midfield on the break. Nathan (Nato) Heath swept up well from full back marshalling the defence with Riley ONeill and Stefan Ginesi on his flanks covering any gaps. Nato also showed great determination and support running by coming forward to take two excellent points from play. Conor Dornan worked tirelessly at half back and set up several attacks for the blues by connecting with the McDonald twins, Rory Smith, Oisin Savage and Oran Bolton up front. Conor also demonstrated his ability to use both feet with some impressive quick thinking and passing under pressure. Damian McDowell was a tank in defence when he was introduced from the bench. Not sure what he had for dinner that evening but he was clearly on a mission and showed how a defender should attack the ball at speed with boundless courage and determination. The team deserved to win but opponents Saul were gracious in defeat. They showed admirable sportsmanship after the game and their team captain made an impressive speech in front of the gathered masses before the presentation was made to Peter McMullan the winning team captain.

The final score was 5-10 to 4-03 for the Blues but the score didnt reflect how close and competitive this game really was. Loughinislands scorers were: Oran Bolton 3-04; Dara McDonald 1- 02; Nathan Heath 0-02; Tom McDonald 1-01 and Peter McMullan 0-01. The whole squad must be congratulated for a fine performance on the night and also throughout the whole league campaign.

Particular thanks must go to all parents; team sponsors: Liam McDonald (White Mountain), Paul McMullan (Ballynahinch Solicitor), and Gillian Ginesi (Ginesis Caf Ballynahinch); and the two new u12 coaches Davy Smith and Rory Mason with help from Brendan Kearney (u10 manager) who have drilled these guys to within a inch of their lives in preparation. All involved have been more than generous with their personal time and money all year. The Club wish to congratulate the squad for their well deserved success and for representing the Club in such a sporting manner and to the management team and supporters for their dedication throughout.

    2013- U12's League Champions! 2013- U12's Capt

  • ACPRFL Result 27th Aug 13 Mayobridge 1-11 Loughinisland 3-12 The blues travelled to the current league leaders with a small squad but came away with a big result. This game was very much in the balance until the final minutes and was much closer than the final scoreline suggests.

The boys settled very quickly into the game and raced into a deserved lead with an early goal from Willie Russell and some fine points from Conor O'Reilly and Conor Megoran. However as the half wore on the bridge as expected began to exert their own pressure and with 5 mins to the break they banged in a goal and couple of points in quick succession.

This set up a tense second half and so it was with both teams trading scores on every attack. Then came the turning point in the game with the blues lead cut to a single point the bridge number 10 cut through the full back line and looked certain to score however big Chris Turley pulled off and wonder save and his team mates managed to scramble the ball to safety. Had this went in the blues would have been well and truly on the ropes.

However with the next island attack the dangerous O'Reilly found himself in acres of space and he made no mistake smashing the ball into the roof of the bridge net. So instead of a 2pt deficit the blues stretched their lead to 4pts.

For the final 10 minutes the boys defended strongly and up the other end Paddy McKinney was clipping over some valuable scores to keep the bridge chasing the game. With a minute to go and with the bridge pushing for a goal themselves the blues broke clear and the ball was finally dispatched to the bridge net by the boot of McKinney. So that was it all over at the bridge next up another away fixture this time to Kilcoo.

  • Seniors Beat Stone in Championship: The Seniors beat Longstone by 9 points in the opening game of this years Championship last Thursday Night. Following a slow start both sides looked nervous and it took nearly 10 mins for either side to register a score. Longstone with out Ambrose Rodgers took a two point lead before the blues registered their first score after 15 mins. Slowly but surely the half forward line of Ben OReilly, Conor Magoran and Paul Digney started to impose their influence and this helped get the full forward line including Aarron McClements and Jamie OReilly into the action. 5 minutes before the break Jamie OReilly took a long ball from brother Ben, turned and finished neatly to the net, the tide was turning and two moments of madness seen Longstone reduced to 13, all of a sudden it was the blues game to lose. In The second half the lads relaxed into their rhythm and used the two man advantage by having long periods of possession and restricting their opponents to minimal scoring opportunities. With Philip Martin closely marshalling County Star Mark Poland, the Stone battled hard but were unable to close the gap. Aaron McClements sealed the points with a brilliant finish following a great team move to seal the game with a final score of 2-11 to 0-8. Next up, the County Champions Kilcoo in Downpatrick.

  • Ladies footballers reach final again! The senior ladies footballers reached their second championship final in as many years after overcoming neighbours Saul in Downpatrick on Saturday evening. In a rained drenched first half the blues got off to a brilliant start with a goal from captain Brenda Ohare, the rangy midfielder took on three players and slotted past the keeper with her left foot to give her team a dream start. Siobhan McCann converted a free to put four points between the sides. Saul began to come to terms with the game and hit two unanswered points, nadine mason rattled the crossbar before Laura Bundy mason and Michelle Morgan and two further points to give the blues a commanding first half lead.

Saul came out in the second half and grabbed an early goal leaving two points between the sides. Gemma gibney grabbed the game by the scruff driving her team forward and the blues hit 6 unanswered points. When Saul did threaten they found the full back line and goalkeeper Helen rice in outstanding form, man of the match Michaela Flynn gave left half back master class for 60 minutes something that older brother johnny would be proud of! All over the park the blues found tirelessly throughout the game and ended up with a 7 point victory to set up a final date with rivals bright on Saturday the 17th of August. The girls will hope to go one step further than last year and lift the cup that their years hard work and effort deserves.

The blues started the better and were 3 points up within 5 minutes and were unlucky not to be further in front at half time. A goal from the visitors mid way through the first half ensured Longstone were still in the game at half time. The blues played the better football and following the sending of of Longstones Corner Forward the blues remained in the lead until the visitors struck with another goal with five minutes remaining and subsequently defended stoutly to hold out for a one point win. Loughinisland 0-13 Longstone 2-8.

    • Sun 28th July 2013 Reserves V An Riocht (H) 2:00pm
  • Premier Reserve Result L'Island 1-16 Clonduff 1-8. The blues recorded a comfortable victory at home against a very physical Hilltown side. The opening quarter saw the lads open up a 5 pt lead through some great scores from Conor O'Reilly and Conor Megoran. On the 20 min mark the blues underlined their superiority with a smashing goal from the boot of Aiden Nixon. As the half drew to a close Peter Cochrane and Raymond Nixon found their shooting boots and both chipped in with some well taken points. So a good half ended with a score of 1-11 to 0-4 points.

Hilltown came out a transformed side in the second half and they registered 1-3 to no score in the first 10 minutes to leave just 4pts between the sides. Hilltown's chief tormentor during this spell was the evergreen Shane Ward who reminded us all of his undoubted quality.

A four point margin was as good as it got for Clonduff as the blues responded well in the final quarter. The introduction of Paul Digney and Joe Doran helped settle the blues and both contributed well to the final whistle.

So overall a good solid display from the blues all over the field with notable performances from the full back line who dealt well with the dangerous Hilltown forward line.

Up next for the blues is a another home game this time against the Kingdom.

    Scorers: B Ward 0-1, C O'Reilly 0-3, Peter Cochrane 0-2, A Nixon 1-0, Conor Megoran 0-3, C Killen 0-2, P Digney 0-1, S Cochrane 0-1, R Nixon 0-2, G Morgan 0-1. Capt: M Doran

  • Premier Reserve Championship Kilcoo v Loughinisland. The island travelled to Kilcoo full of optimism following last weeks good performance against Saval in the league. The restrictions placed on our small panel of players for this fixture meant that a number of players currently in retirement came out and pulled on the blue jersey once again namely Damien Mason, Alan Molloy, Brendan Ward and the evergreen Joe Doran. To add to this group the talented Willie Russell participated in his first game since a long injury layoff. The addition of senior men ensured the blues remained competitive right to the final whistle of this entertaining encounter.

The early part of the first half saw both team trading scores however as the half wore on Kilcoo began to dominate the midfield sector and at the break the blues trailed by 4 points. Things could have been much worse was it not for the finishing from the lively Conor Megoran.

At the interval the blues made some positional changes in the back line along with a some forced substitutions due to injury. So on came the big Alan and Damien and the blues gradually began to get a foothold in the game. Kilcoo actually scored heavily in the first 10 minutes of the second half and opened up a 10pt lead.

However with pride at stake the blues responded gamely. A second goal from Megoran and a further 3 converted frees inside the 14 meant the blues were right back in it. With 15 minutes left on the clock on came big Willie to the edge of the square and within 2 minutes the pass of the match from young Calum Noade sent Russell straight through and he made no mistake claiming the maximum - game on.

Kilcoo sensed a reversal and began to hold onto procession cutely around the midfield area running the clock down in the process. The blues had chances to tie it but in the end a well worked score from the Kilcoo number 14 ( a constant thorn all day) ensured they came away with a 2 pt victory.

So that's it for another year but hopefully all the lads can come away with a bit of pride and look forward to the remaining league fixtures.

  • U12 Match Carryduff Tournament Sat 15th June. The young blues attended a tournament on Saturday in Carryduff with 40 teams from 14 Counties . The 14 man squad had a tough first game against Carryduff A who were defending the title. The lads were a bit slow to start but when they got into their stride they were too strong for the hosts. Peter McMullan was excellent playing at Full back for the first time. He swept up from the square and set up some great attacking moves running from defence. Nathan Heath played some great football from Midfield and made some cracking passes to Oran Bolton in front of the goals who was clinical in his finishing.

The Blues played St Brides next and ran out winners 5-07 to 0-01 in a somewhat one-sided game. Rory Smyth, Joseph Kennedy and Michael Clarke came off the bench to show great skills and slotted in to the team comfortably. Joseph scored a great goal raising at full stretch to punch a side line ball from Brandon Boyd to the net.

Next up was a tough Magherafelt side but the blues came through that one with great spirit showing their determination and will to win. They won that game 0-04 to 0-02. As Group winners they progressed to the semi-final of the Cup against a slick Clan Eireann outfit who were very fast and highly skilled but no match for the blues who were clearly very determined to win. The young blues won 2-05 to 0-04 in a very fast game. The other semi-final saw local rivals Kilcoo come through against Clan Na Gael to create an intercounty final. The Final was a closely fought contest between these local rivals. Kilcoo came out winners 2-06 to 0-05 although the game was much closer than the score suggests. The lads performed really well throughout the day despite the terrible weather conditions and showed their class and ability to compete with the best teams in the country when they work as a team.

Sunday morning was an away league game to St Johns. The guys were still a bit match weary from the day before but worked hard as a team to grind out a 3-09 to 1-06 winning scoreline keeping them at the top of the League and unbeaten. Eddie Nixon impressed at half back and Stefan Ginesi and Riley ONeill kept the defence solid throughout the game. Oisin Savage, Shea OToole and Odhran Barlow made a positive impact when they were introduced from the bench.

Photo of 14 Man squad at Carryduff tournament.

The year 6 team recently played at the annual Carryduff Tournament, and performed very well on the day. Two wins and a draw ensured they topped their group, qualifying for the semi final of the cup. Winning by three scores to two at half time in the semi final the boys were unfortunate to hit the woodwork twice in the second half, whilst Lavey took all of their opportunities eventually winning by two points. The lads regrouped for the 3rd and 4th places play offs, and won by 9 scores to 7 in a highly entertaining match. Lavey went on to win the final of the Cup competition, while the three teams Loughinisland played in the group stages all went on to win in their Shield, Plate and Trophy competitions. Both the players and supporters went home happy having come third out of the sixteen teams from numerous counties across the provinces. The event was a really well organised and Carryduff played excellent hosts for the gathered masses.

  • Best of Luck to Aaron McClements and the Down Minors for their Ulster Championship Semi Final This Sunday.

The blues started strongly and were 4points up within as many minutes. An Riocht battled back and got themselves in to the game. But some great movement and finishing and a goal from Rory Mason give the blues a comfortable 11 point lead at half time. The Second half seen a fightback from the visitors but it was too little too late and the ran out eventual winners by 13 points. Next up for the Seniors is Ballyholland (Away) Friday 14th June 7:30pm.
  • Reserves: The reserves recorded a 10 point victory over Saval. Winning 3-12 to 1-8.
  • U-14's enjoyed two very good Victorys last week and now sit at the top of the league. First up was Bright away, the whole team battle hard and came away with a 1 point victory! Shooting from both sides was top class but we edged it with a scoreline of 6-13 to 7-09! Top performances came from Declan McClements and Aiden Mcloughlin in midfield and in the forward line from Edward Nixon, Peter McMullan, Oran Bolton and Brandon Boyd! On Saturday evening we entertained St Paul's and again some excellent play and the work rate from our boys was enough to beat a tough St Paul's team 2-11 to 1-08!

  • The u14s were stretched to the limit last Monday night away to a relentless Bright side. The scoreboard fluctuated quite a bit throughout the game. Loughinisland took an early lead and lead most of the game. However a second half surge from Bright took them into what seemed to be an unassailable 8 points lead with only five minutes left on the clock. All credit must go to the Blues for keeping their heads up and battling to the very end. The last five minutes of the game was very entertaining football to watch, particularly from an Island supporter perspective, as they watched their team snatch victory from the jaws of defeat with three superb very late goals to win by a single point. Aiden McLoughlin stole the match when he timed his run perfectly to receive the ball from a 30 metre free played by a quick thinking Declan McClements. Young Aiden showed his determination and class, turning on a sixpence, to smash the ball to the net with the last kick of the game past what seemed an impenetrable wall of Bright players crowding the goal line. The Blues were delighted to leave Bright with two points from this game and hopefully learned that the game isnt over until the final whistle blows.

On Sunday the reserves lost out to Rostrevor.

  • Loughinisland Year 6 team had one of their most successful tournaments in years when finishing as runners up to RGU in the Cup competition at the Peter Hawkin's Tournament in Drumaness on Saturday. In the first round of matches the boys beat Ardoyne and lost to Ballyholland. In the next round the boys beat Drumaness, scoring 13 point in 20 minutes, and losing to neighbours Teconnaught. With a superior scoring difference the team qualified for the Cup semi final and faced a Ballyholland side who had beaten the Blues by 20 points in the first round. In pouring rain, and with the opposition missing their most influencial player, loughinisland ran out winners on a score of 4.6 to 0.2.

In the final RGU were worthy winners, scoring 9 points from play. Many thanks to Kevin Brennan for the invite, to all other organisers at Drumaness, and many congratulations to RGU. Loughinisland fielded PeterK, Brian, Odhran, Dylan, Damian, 2 Shea's, Aaron, Chris Allen, Boyd twins,, Oisin, Connor, Ronan and Finn, allstars on the day.

  • Seniors V Rostrevor: ACFL Div 1 LOUGHINISLAND 1-9 Rostrevor 1-5. Last Wednesday Night the seniors entertained Rostrevor and at half time were trailing 5 points to 2, however in the second half supported by a strong wind the team defended as a team and may it virtually impossible for Rostrevor to score, the blues played on the break and restricted Rostrevor to few chances. Their only score coming from a penalty. The blues ended up winners by 1-9 to 1-5.
  • Seniors V Kilcoo: ACFL Div 1 LOUGHINISLAND 0-9 KILCOO 1-7. Loughinisland played the County Champions, Kilcoo and gave a good account of themselves by only been beaten by one point. Playing with a strong wind behind them in the first half Loughinisland were able to contain the Kilcoo forwards to only sporadic scoring efforts. The first two points were registered by Loughinisland and this was followed mid way through the first half by a point form Kilcoo which was their only score of the half. In a low scoring half Loughinisland went on to score a further 3 points before half time to leave the score at the break Loughinisland 0-5, Kilcoo 0-1.

With the advantage of the wind Kilcoo set about reducing their arrears and after 10 minutes of the second half had levelled the scores at 0-5 each. However Loughinislands John McCarthy and Dominic McClements were dominating mid-field and some good work be their half forward line of Conor Megoran, Paddy McKinney and Jamie OReilly resulted in Loughinisland re-taking the lead with two well worked points. Shortly after establishing this two point lead an uncharacteristic lapse in defence lead to a soft goal being taken by Kilcoo. Then with 10 minutes to go Kilcoo scored a point to go two in front. At this stage of the game it looked that Kilcoo would push on for a comfortable win but this Loughinisland team showed great character and fitness that they have been playing this year to score two points to bring the game level again. When it looked that it might finish as a draw Kilcoo managed to score the winning point with a minute of the game remaining after a lapse in the Loughinisland defence.

Overall this was a great performance by Loughinisland in holding Kilcoo to a one point defeat and with this being their first year back in Division 1 should give them great confidence in that they can match the best teams in the County.

  • The Loughinisland U12 Boys sporting their new Windcheaters sponsored by Paul McMullan, Solicitor, from Ballynahinch.

    U12s May 2013 Season

The U12 boys made an excellent winning start to the league with five straight wins out of five in as many weeks. Their first win came at home to St Johns. The second win was a tough fought battle for so early in the season against a well drilled and energetic Saul outfit. The third victory was comprehensive over Carryduff B and this midweek away game was closely followed by a much tighter home win against Darragh Cross on the Following Sunday. The most recent success was against a relatively small Dromara side last Sunday with the Blues scoring an impressive tally of 14-16 to 4-04. This successful start has secured them the league leader position for the young Blues and presents them with the difficult challenge of holding on to the lead for the remainder of the season. The boys have performed well in this 11-a-side league format and really look like, and are consistently performing like, a strong division one team. The large u12 squad includes some u10 boys who are cutting their teeth at the next level. These u10 players are also given the opportunity on a weekly basis to stretch and develop their skills at u12 level against other local clubs in a competitive environment. The lads have shown that they enjoy playing together and that they are developing good habits (including winning) by playing to their strengths as a Unit.

Last Sundays stars for the Blues against Dromara were Brandon Boyd with an individual tally of 4-04, Rory Smyth who racked up 1-2, Joseph Kennedy who scored an excellent opportunistic goal and Peter McMullan who drove one to the roof of the net from distance. The team showed their talent by scoring and passing with both feet and played their signature running game for which Dromara had no answer. Nathan Heath produced some great supporting runs from defence to set up several attacks and Eddie Nixon put in his usual industrious performance winning lots of ball at half back and defending tenaciously. The boys are growing in confidence and determination with every game. They have a great supporters following who give them much needed encouragement and praise for their efforts. The management team would like to thank those loyal supporters who travel with the team every week. Training continues this week on Wednesday night at 5.45pm. Next weeks match is at home to Bright.

  • U10 Match Report The u10s played on Saturday morning at the Blitz hosted at the RGU. Loughinisland started really well against Downpatrick B with Oisin Savage, Brian Kennedy and Jamie Boyd taking the first three points from their weak foot to take the Blues into an early lead. Downpatrick put it up to the guys in the second half but the Blues played well throughout with some excellent teamwork and skills. The second game was against the stronger Downpatrick A team and the Blues had to defend from the start against a strong wind. Peter Kearney polished up his goalkeeping skills keeping some tough shots out from a well drilled RGU forward line. In Game 3 the Blues took on Ardglass and the younger guys had a great chance to hone their skills. Young Ronan McGlew came of age taking an excellent goal and following up with a quick point. Shea Valentine, Conor ONeill, Conor Kelly and Christopher Boyd gelled well upfront tallying up a number of points for the Blues. Aaron Noade also put in a strong performance showing some great potential.

  • ACPRL Div 1 Island 3-7 v Mayobridge 2-4

The blues entertained Mayobridge at McCartan Park on Sunday and they had to work overtime to stay in touch with the fast moving bridge team. The blues went in 4pts down at half time with a scoreline of 1-2 to 2-3 and things were looking very difficult at that stage.

However half time came at the right time for the blues and they emerged for the second half in a more positive manner. A number of positional changes tightened up the backline and this gave the blues the platform they needed to apply some pressure on the underworked bridge back six.

Goals from the lively Cormac Deegans and Conor O'Reilly eventually got the blues ahead for the first time in the game. Points then followed from the boot of the impressive Damham O'Toole and Rory Mason. As the second half wore on the blues full backline of Paddy Megoran, Oisin Teague and Conor Corrigan finally got the to grips with the pacy bridge forwards and the blues never looked back.

The pace of the game dropped in the final minutes which suited the blues and they were able to handle anything the bridge had to offer. Next up for the blues is the rescheduled fixture against Clonduff next Friday. Scorers: C Deegans 2-0, C O'Reilly 1-3, R Mason 0-3, D O'Toole 0-1 Capt: M Doran

  • U10 Match report

The U10s took to the field at Laitrom on Saturday morning. The boys faced strong opposition from the home team Laitrom and a very strong and well drilled Kilcoo side. The team pulled together and strung some great attacks together resulting in some fine scores for the young blues.

  • U12 Match Report

The u12s played their second game of the league away to a strong Saul outfit on Sunday morning. Although the blues were several players down they worked extremely hard as a team and their spirit paid dividends in the end despite a great comeback from Saul in the latter part of the second half. This was a very intense and entertaining game for the spectators and one that both teams should be proud off. Best for the Blues was Riley ONeill, Eddie Nixon and Tom McDonald who were solid in defence. Mikey Muirin made an excellent debut for the Blues and gelled well with the team for his first appearance. Peter McMullan and Nathan Heath worked really hard in midfield, setting up many attacks for a small forward line. Michael Clarke was fantastic at full forward with a tally of 3-03. Dara McDonald racked up 1-01 and Peter McMullan notched up 1-02. The Kennedy brothers displayed some great skills and also put a goal each on the scoreboard for the Blues. The final score was 7-06 to 5- 09 for the Blues. Much of the credit must undoubtedly go to Peter Kearneys excellent goalkeeping for Loughinisland. Training continues this week. Text to follow with details.

The blues were always ahead in this game with early scores from Aiden Nixon and Conor O'Reilly however Saval proved difficult opponents and they pushed the island all the way to the final whistle.

The blues forward line was much sharper this week with 5 out the 6 starting lineup getting on the scoresheet. Midfield superiority was eventually established in the second half with some fine fielding from Dominic McClements.

The backline was well marshalled by the ever improving Raymond Nixon and he enjoyed great support from his colleagues in particular Conor Killen and Declan Corrigan.

The blues half back and half forward line worked hard all afternoon and won a lot more second phase possession. Once the ball was in hand the experienced duo of Seamus O'Hare and Matt Doran along with Conor Megoran placed a number of quality balls into the full forward line. All three players contributed some fine individual scores from play with O'Hare finishing the day as top scorer. Next up for the blues is another away fixture this time to neighbours Castlewellen. Never much between these sides so expect another stiff test. Scorers: A Nixon 0-3, D McClements 0-1, S O'Hare 0-4, C O'Reilly 0-2, C Megoran 0-2, M Doran 0-2. Captain: Raymond Nixon.

  • Rostrevor 1-8 Loughinisland 1-10

Loughinisland kicked off the 2013 premier rerserve season with a hard fought 2 point victory over a fast moving Rostrevor team.

Rostrevor started the game in menacing form and took an early 2 points to no score lead with 10 mins gone on the clock. Some further poor handling from the island rearguard gifted Rostrevor a third score and it looked as though Loughinisland were in for a torrid afternoon. With Rostrevor still in the ascendancy the game became increasingly disjointed however these stoppages seemed to benefit this young island team. It wasn't until the 16th minute that the loughinisland registered their first score of game with a point from the boot of Conor O'Reilly. This score settled the island team and with Cormac O'Toole and Damhan O'Toole beginning to get a foothold at midfield Loughinisland rattled over a further 4 unanswered points in quick succession. With the first half drawing to close both teams traded scores however the blues went in with their noses in front with a one point lead 6points to 5.

The second half started exactly as the first with Rostrevor getting out of the blocks very strongly. Straight from the throw in they won primary posession and worked a good score to level the game at 6 points a piece. The game once again became very scappy but the blues managed to keep the scoreboard ticking over with 1 free from Seamus O'Hare and well taken scrore from the left boot of Calum Noade. The island team increased their work rate and with this and the introduction of Rory Mason began to dominate the game. The 15th minute saw the island being awarded their first of 2 penalty kicks. Good interplay in the final 3rd seen Rostrover left with no option but to foul Conor O'Reilly who was heading straight for goal. Up stepped Conor Killen who struck the ball low for the cornor but the big Rostrover keeper pulled of a fantastic save to push it round the post. Within 20 secs of the restart Rostrover had tagged on another score to leave one point between the sides. Then game came the the turning point in game with the island under pressure in defence a great piece of tackling by Raymond Nixon allowed Rory Mason to charge up the field only to the fouled on the 40 by a tired rostrevor defender. The resultant free was punted in the goal mouth by the accurate boot of Seamus O'Hare and Cormac O'Toole rose highest on the edge of the square only to be fouled by a at least 3 rostrevor defenders - the ref had no option but to signal for a second penalty. With penalty kick duties changed a confident Rory Mason stepped up to drive the ball low and hard into the corner. The blues were 4 pionts up with 8 mins left to play. As expected Rostrover came back fighting with with some slick hand passing and movement they play managed to scramble a goal.

With only a point between the sides again with 5 mins left on the clock it was all to play for. Some smart delivery from the centre of the field by Paul Digney and Declan Corrigan allowed the island forwards to gain first phase possesion within the 20 metres of the rostrevor goals and they drew 2 very kickable frees. The dependable O'Hare split the posts on both ocassions and the blues had extended their lead to 3 points. The final phase of play saw the Rostrover team go for broke but some displicined defending by the young Oisin Teague & Conor Corrigan ensured they only manage a single score before the ref blew the final whistle and called time on this entertaining opening to the 2013 campaign. Captain: Comac OToole.
